The Lobos – Ingrid Gutierrez, Alexandra Moisand, Darian Zachek, Reva Morris, Caroline Jansson, and Emma Edwards.
TUCSON, Ariz. — It’s another top-10 finish for The University of New Mexico women’s golf team here at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational hosted by the University of Arizona.
“We finished in 9th place and moved up four spots today!” said head coach Jill Trujillo.
The Lobos ended their first day in 13th place after carding a team total of 22-over 598. Trujillo mentioned that the team needed to be more consistent for their final round and they listened.
Junior Darian Zachek was tied for 20th after her first two rounds after totaling at 1-over 145. Zachek held the lead for the Lobos throughout the competition and climbed up the leaderboard by eight spots to claim a 12th place finish with a 3-round total score of 1-over 217 [73-72-72].
“Darian had a solid showing tying for 12th after another consistent round of the tournament,” said Trujillo.
Senior Ingrid Gutierrez finished only two spots away from the top-20 after totaling at 5-over 221 [73,73,75]. Gutierrez has been consistent throughout her final spring season for UNM and has hopes of taking the lead as the team heads into the rest of their season. Fellow senior, Alexandra Moisand was next behind Gutierrez after earning her final score of 11-over 227 [77-76-74]. Freshman Caroline Jansson had a rough three rounds after carding a final score of 15-over 231 [76-79-76]. Jansson has qualified for every invitational since her career started in the fall 2017 season and has been a strong force for the Lobos. Junior Emma Edwards also struggled to find her stride these last three rounds but finished with a respectable score of 23-over 239 [76-80-83] here in Tucson, Arizona.
Sophomore Reva Morris competed as an individual for the Lobos and shared a final score with fellow teammate, Caroline Jansson, and totaled at 15-over 231 [72-77-82]. According to Trujillo, Morris has added a lot to the team this year through her positivity and workmanship since her transfer in fall 2017.
“We still have some areas that need to improve before we leave for Mexico next week,” said Trujillo. “We dropped five shots in our last four holes with some late bogeys that were due to mental errors.”
The Lobos have a little over a week until they will be heading to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for the Hawkeye El Tigre Invitational on March 16th and will compete in three rounds.
“Once we connect our mental game to our golf shots, the mistakes will go away,” mentioned Trujillo.
