Lobos host Mountain West opener against Nevada
Albuquerque, N.M.— The Lobos of the University of New Mexico men’s tennis team will face up against the Wolf Pack of Nevada at 4 P.M. on Friday, March 30 at McKinnon Family Tennis Center to kick off Mountain West Play for the 2018 season.
The Lobos, under the leadership of Head Coach Ben Dunbar and Assistant Coach Robin Goodman, are coming off a 10-7 start to the season, while Nevada is coming off of an 11-3 record.
The Lobos have gained momentum with many notable feats this season, including a third place finish at the Mountain Pacific Invitational. The Lobos have also tallied some impressive wins over the course of the season, with close victories over Drake, UC Santa Barbara and Wichita State, who were the first place team in the Mountain Pacific Invitational. The team has also nabbed impressive triumphs in neutral matches, with two wins over Big 10 foes, a 4-3 win over Nebraska and an exciting 4-0 sweep of Michigan State.
New Mexico and Nevada met once last season in Mountain West play, with the Lobos clinching a victory over the Wolf Pack by a score 4-1 in Reno.
The Lobos are returning two-time All-Mountain West senior in both singles and doubles, Bart Van Leijsen; 2017 selection for All-Mountain West singles, junior Ricky Hernandez-Tong; as well as 2017 selection for All-Mountain West doubles, sophomore Dominic West, for the 2018 season. Other returning Lobos include seniors Jorge Escutia and Sean Baklini and redshirt junior Michael Tran. New players for the Lobos include freshmen Tim Buttner and Stepan Holis.
“We are excited to start conference play,” Head Coach Ben Dunbar said. “Our group is peaking at the right time and ready to rock and roll this weekend. Hopefully we will have lots of fans come and watch us on Friday at 4 PM. The weather is supposed to be great, so we would love to have good support, so come out and enjoy the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium.”
