ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Despite being a little shorthanded, the New Mexico Lobos took care of business, picking up a 6-1 win over CSU-Pueblo on Tuesday morning to improve to 4-6 on the season. The match was a rescheduled home match from March 2, when UNM had to postpone three matches due to injuries to several members of the team suffered in a car accident.
Despite the switch, UNM still entered today’s match shorthanded. Two of UNM’s top players missed the match, Danielle Quevedo with a lingering injury, and Diana Wong, who had an exam to take. UNM head coach Stephanie Wooten-Quijada also rested Bronte Murgett as well, moving everyone up a slot in the singles ladder. The move rested UNM’s usual Nos. 2, 3 and 4 singles players.
In doubles it was no problem as UNM swept the point, taking all three flights. Ruth Copas and Murgett won 6-0 at No. 1, while Hsiang-Wen “Albie” Huang and Yue Lin “Polly” Chen won 6-1 at No. 2 and Lauren Rich and Natasha Munday did likewise at No. 3.
Singles play was a quick affair, from start to finish not lasting 90 minutes. UNM went up 2-0 when Copas made quick work at No. 1 singles, winning 6-1, 6-1, and then Chen, playing all the way up at No. 2 won 6-0, 6-0. The Lobos officially clinched the win with Huang’s 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3. Jaci Fulgenzi, earning her first dual match of the Spring, lost at No. 6 6-1, 7-5, but Munday picked her up at No. 4 with a 6-0, 7-5 win, taking four of the last five games to close it out.
The left No. 5 singles, and Lauren Rich methodically put away her opponent 6-3, 6-2. The win pushed UNM to 4-6 on the season. The Lobos return home to host Western New Mexico in another make-up date on Saturday at 1 p.m.
NOTES: Copas, Huang and Chen are all tied for the team lead in singles wins with 11 … Munday, Rich, Huang and Murgett all have 12 doubles wins, but Rich has the best winning percentage at .667 (12-6).
