ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico baseball team looks to get back to its winning ways as the Lobos get their first chance to play at home in 2018 when they begin a four-game series against Central Michigan 6 p.m. Thursday at Santa Ana Star Field.

The Lobos are coming off a tough schedule at the College Baseball Classic in Surprise, Arizona, where it opened the season 1-3 with a win over Cal Poly, a pair of losses to 2017 College World Series participant and No. 2 Oregon State and a loss to defending West Coast Conference champion Gonzaga.

Junior first baseman Jeff Deimling paced the Lobos at the plate over the weekend by hitting .353 (6-for-17) with a team-high four RBI to go along with a double. The Albuquerque native also had a game-winning two-run single in the top of the 10th in a 3-1 win over Cal Poly on Saturday. He also had a stretch where he had five hits in five consecutive at-bats.

Freshman Garrett Gouldsmith went 3-for-10 for the Lobos while getting three starts at second base while shortstop Hayden Schilling went 4-for-15 (.267) with two RBI, a double and a team-high three runs and the team’s lone stolen base.

Overall, the team hit .202 at the four-game event in Arizona.

On the mound, the Lobos were good over the first three games – giving up just 10 runs over that stretch before giving up 15 on Monday to the second-ranked Beavers. That bumped the UNM ERA to 5.14 with 33 strikeouts in 35 innings.

The Lobo bullpen paced the pitching staff as it went the first 16 innings without giving up an earned run. The effort was led by Nathaniel Garley as he pitched five scoreless and no-hit innings in picking up the win over Cal Poly with seven strikeouts and one walk. James Harrington went 4.1 innings without giving up a run in relief while Chad Smith (2.2 innings), Malachi Emond (2.1), Brian Coffey (1.2), Christian Tripp (0.2) and Schilling (0.1) also all went scoreless in relief over the four-game event.

The Chippewas are 2-2 on the season after opening the season at the UTRGV Al Ogletree Classic in Edinbug, Texas. CMU defeated Stephen F. Austin twice (5-3 and 10-8) and lost to University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley twice (7-6 in 10 innings and 6-3).

Highlighting the weekend was Michael Brettell as he earned MAC Pitcher of the Week after going seven innings and giving up one run on six hits with 10 strikeouts against Stephen F. Austin on Friday. Zach Heeke led the Chippewas with five RBI over the weekend while going 5-for-9 while Zach Gilles was CMU’s top power threat over the weekend sas he went 6-for-18 with a home run, three doubles, seven runs and two RBI.
