ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — After three weeks, The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team returned to action after a car accident sidelined half the team.  Despite the challenge of a first match in three weeks and not a lot of practice time, UNM and NAU went to the wire before Madi Moore took down Yue Lin “Polly” Chen in the final match to give the Lumberjacks a 4-3 win.

The Lobos dropped to 1-2 on the season.  New Mexico’s next match is a rescheduled match against Abilene Christian on Friday at noon in Abilene, Texas.

UNM jumped out to a 1-0 lead, taking the doubles point 2-1.  Ruth Copas and Hsiang-Wen “Albie” Huang won at No. 2 doubles 6-3 over Eirene Granville and CoraLynn Von Dungern, but Natasha Munday and Danielle Quevedo lost at No. 1 doubles 6-4 to Hanneke Lodewijks and Ellie Millard.  That left it to the No. 3 doubles match, and UNM’s pairing of Bronte Murgett and Diana Wong took that match 7-5 over Chiara Tomasetti and Madi Moore.

The doubles win meant UNM would need just three singles wins, but they just couldn’t get there.  Ironically, all four players that were involved in the car accident lost their singles matches.  Northern Arizona tied the match at 1-1 when Tomasetti took down Wong 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.  UNM then retook the lead at 2-1 when Quevedo nearly white-washed Von Dungern 6-1, 6-0.  Huang then feel at No. 5 6-1, 6-2 to Millard to level the match at 2-2.

UNM again took the lead at 3-2 when Murgett took a 6-2, 6-4 win over Granville at No. 4 singles, but UNM couldn’t get the clincher.  Copas, who entered at 9-2 on the year, dropped her match 6-3, 6-3 to Lodewijks at No. 1, and then Chen fell moments later 6-2, 6-2 to Moore to give NAU the win.

NOTES:  It’s the second straight year that the Lumberjacks defeated UNM 4-3 … Quevedo’s win improved her to 9-3 on the season, tying with Copas for the best record on the team … the match took 3:41.
