Two Lobos Set School Records to Finish MW Championships

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The University of New Mexico women’s swimming and diving team finished its time at the 2018 Mountain West Championships after seven final events on Saturday. UNM finished sixth in team scoring, finishing with a final score of 673.50 while breaking four school records during the four-day meet.

The Lobos were led by junior Adriana Palomino, who broke the UNM school record in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:22.34, beating her own previous record of 16:22.46. Palomino’s performance earned her second place in the event. Freshman Matea Sumajstorcic also placed in the top-10 of the event, finishing eighth with a time of 16:39.11.

Junior Emily Huffer captured a UNM record of her own in the 200-yard butterfly, breaking Celine Bertrand’s time of 1:59.25. Huffer finished second in the event with a final time of 1:58.38. Her final time narrowly missed her record-breaking time of 1:58.30 in the preliminaries. Freshman Klara Farkas also competed in the A-Final with Huffer, posting a final time of 2:01.71. The two swimmers were followed by junior Konoha Shinada and senior Bertrand in the B-Final. Shinada and Bertrand finished back-to-back in 13th and 14th place, posting final times of 2:03.85 and 2:03.98 respectively.

The diving team also performed well on platform, with two Lobos making the top-10 in the event. Junior Allyson Concepcion made the A-Final after a preliminary score of 214.89. She finished eighth in the event with a final score of 180.48. Freshman Hannah Tiendas finished second in the B-Final to finish 10th overall with a final score of 207.00. Sophomore Natasha Dark also posted a top-25 performance, finishing 22nd with a score of 187.56.

Junior Carol De Groote Tavares paced UNM in the 200-yard backstroke. De Groote Tavares made the B-Final in the event, finishing 14th with a time of 2:00.52. Senior Deidra Dorough narrowly missed the three final events, finishing 26th with a time of 2:02.88.

New Mexico also got solid performances out of three swimmers in the 200-yard breaststroke. Sophomore Asami Terada was the Lobos’ top scorer in the event, posting a time of 2:20.97 in the B-Final for 15th place. Freshman Brooke Zukowski and junior Raevin Teran-Richardson both competed in the C-Final, with Zukowski posting a time of 2:20.18 for 18th and Teran-Richardson posting a 2:23.26 for 23rd.

Senior Madison Burns was the only Lobo to make the three finals in the 100-yard freestyle. Burns made the C-Final, finishing 24th in the event with a time of 51.49.

The Mountain West Championships closed with the 400-yard freestyle relay, where the Lobos were represented by Palomino, Farkas, and sophomores Breanna Wiercinski and Talia Passarelli. The squad finished in 10th place with a final time of 3:25.40.

Boise State University earned its second-straight Mountain West Conference Title, finishing the meet with a team score of 1250. San Diego State and Nevada followed, with SDSU scoring 1105.50 and Nevada scoring 1033.50.
