UNM Jumps to Seventh Place at the MW Championships

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The University of New Mexico women’s swimming and diving team will enter the final day of the 2018 Mountain West Championships just 11 points short of sixth place after landing in seventh (435.5 points) after six events on Friday. Boise State remains in the lead of the event with 817 points.

The Lobos were led by freshman Matea Sumajstorcic in the 400-yard individual medley. Sumajstorcic broke Celine Bertrand’s school record in the event in the preliminaries, posting a time of 4:19.65. She then re-broke the record in the A-Final, finishing sixth overall in the event with a final time of 4:19.33. Seniors Deidra Dorough and Bertrand both made the C-Final in the event with Dorough finishing 20th with a time of 4:26.07 and Bertrand finishing 23rd with a time of 4:30.08.

Junior Adriana Palomino paced UNM in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing sixth overall with a final time of 1:48.42. Freshman Klara Farkas won the B-Final for a ninth overall finish with a time of 1:48.60.

Junior Konoha Shinada matched Palomino’s finish in the 100-yard butterfly finals. Shinada finished sixth in the event after posting a final time of 53.93. Sophomore Talia Passarelli also captured a top-25 finish in the event after securing 24th in the C-Final with a time of 56.84.

The Lobos had four swimmers land in the top-25 of the 100-yard breaststroke. Sophomore Asami Terada led the way, racing in the B-Final and finishing 10th overall with a time of 1:02.45. Passarelli also participated in the B-Final, posting a time of 1:04.18 for 16th place. Junior Raevin Teran-Richardson and freshman Brooke Zukowski made the C-Final, with Teran-Richardson finishing 20th with a time of 1:04.71 and Zukowski finishing 23rd with a time of 1:05.42.

Junior Emily Huffer was the Lobos’ top performer in the 100-yard backstroke, racing in the B-Final. She finished 14th place with a time of 55.39. Junior Carol De Groote Tavares made the C-Final in the event, posting a final time of 56.26 for 21st place.

Finally, Shinada, Huffer, Terada and senior Madison Burns teamed up to represent New Mexico in the 400-yard medley relay. The squad finished seventh with a final time of 3:41.63.

The Mountain West Championships conclude on Saturday with seven events including the 1650-yard freestyle, the 200-yard backstroke, the 100-yard freestyle, the 200-yard breaststroke, the 200-yard butterfly, the 400-yard freestyle relay and platform diving. Fans are able to stream the event live on FloSwimming online or on the site’s app on iOS, Roku and Apple TV 4.
