WACO, Texas — The No. 19 Baylor Bears swept the New Mexico Lobos 7-0 at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center in Waco in the season opening match for UNM. The Bears earlier in the day won 7-0 over Western Michigan.
The match was the first official collegiate match for four members of the Lobos. Baylor opened up with the doubles point, sweeping all three matches. Giorgia Testa and Camilla Abbate took down native Texan’s Lauren Rich and Danielle Quevedo at No. 3 doubles 6-0. UNM’s Ruth Copas and Hsiang-Wen “Albie” Huang lost at No. 1 doubles 6-3, giving Baylor the doubles point. The teams opted to play out the remaining doubles match at No. 2, with Baylor’s Kris Sorokolet and Dominika Sujova defeated Diana Wong and Bronte Murgett 6-3.
The match moved to singles, with a pair of sweeps giving Baylor a quick 3-0 lead. Sorokolet defeated Wong, who was playing her first career match at No. 1, 6-0, 6-0, and right afterwards, Livia Kraus (ranked No. 110 in singles) defeated Rich at No. 6 singles by the same score.
Needing one more singles win the claim the match, No. 117 Jessica Hinjosa took down Murgett at the No. 5 flight 6-2, 6-1. The teams opted to complete the other three matches, and Baylor went up 5-0 when Copas lost 6-3, 6-1 to Sujova at No. 2 singles, and Huang lost 6-2, 6-1 to Abbate at No. 4 to make it 6-0.
The final match was at No. 3 singles, with UNM’s Quevedo looking to get UNM on the board. After dropping her opening set 7-5 to Testa, Quevedo bounced back with a 6-1 second set win, sending the match to a 10-super set, but Testa nipped her 10-7, giving Baylor the sweep.
“We had some chances to take some more games during the matches, but I thought we battled hard and palyed well against a nationally ranked team,” said head coach Stephanie Wooten-Quijada. “The great thing is we get right back on the court tomorrow.”
The Lobos will remain in Waco and take on Western Michigan in a neutral site match at 5 p.m. Mountain Time on Saturday.
NOTES: Wong ended the 2017 dual season with 12 straight wins … the Bears now lead the all-time series 2-1 … UNM leads the all-time series with Western Michigan 1-0.
