SUGAR GROVE, Ill. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team went out in the early wave of the day, enabling them to finish the entirety of their opening round of the 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships, and eventually finished at 9-over 297 and in a tie for 24th overall.

Weather delays forced play to be suspended twice, totaling three hours and one minute. Thanks to that, half the field in the 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships at Rich Harvest Farms were unable to complete their opening round.

The Lobos were once again led by the play of Andrej Bevins, who carded an even-par 72 today, which allowed him to a 21-way tie for 41st. Bevins’ day started out well, recording a birdie on his second hole of the day and notching four consecutive pars before stumbling making the turn. He bounced back nicely however, going even-par over his last nine holes.

The second-best performer for the UNM squad was Ben Tolsma, who found his stride despite the difficult conditions. Tolsma’s day was a exemplar of consistency, he recorded 14 pars on the day, and answered his third bogey of the day with a birdie on the 562 yard par-5 second.

Today’s 74 marked Tolsma’s third-lowest round of the year.

Next up was Andre Garica, whose day was anything but dull. He began his day 1-under through four holes, yet making the turn he recorded a double-bogey immediately followed by an eagle on the 18th. Thanks to that, he made the turn at even-par, and found consistency on the back-nine aside from a few mistakes and eventually finished the day 21-way tie for 106th.

Gustavo Morantes’ day began even-keeled, yet at the conditions worsened, his relation to par inflated. He made the turn at 1-under, but played the first five holes of his homeward nine in five-over fashion to finish the day at 4-over 76 and part of a 10-way tie for 127th.

Rounding out the list of Lobos on the leaderboard is sophomore Sean Carlon, who played with his usual consistency aside from the par-4 17th, where he recorded a quadruple-bogey. Carlon managed to play the other 17 holes in 1-over fashion, and found himself in a slew of competitors tied for 137th.

Vanderbilt is currently leading the field at eight-under par with all players through 15 holes. Four players starting in the afternoon are currently tied at four-under.

Auburn posted the low round of the day among morning wave of 15 teams, recording a team total of six-under par 282 and in possession of second-place.

Oklahoma State and top-ranked USC sit at five and four-under respectively, in possession of third and fourth-place.

Rounding out the top-5 is a group of four at 3-under.

Braden Thornberry of Ole Miss is the leader in the clubhouse after carding a six-under 66. Thornberry, recorded six birdies and no bogies in his round, tied the course collegiate record set by Zach Seabolt of Winthrop in the first round of the 2014 Northern Intercollegiate and Thomas Detry of Illinois in the second round of the 2015 Northern Intercollegiate.

First-round play will resume on Saturday morning, May 27, at 6:30 a.m. CT, followed by second-round play beginning at 7:15 a.m.
