RHP Tyler Stevens vs. RHP Trevor Charpie
Santa Ana Star Field – Albuquerque, N.M.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Mountain West regular-season champion University of New Mexico baseball team has its attention set on defending its Mountain West Tournament title and earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Regionals when the top-seeded Lobos take on No. 4 Nevada 7 p.m. Thursday at Santa Ana Star Field.

The Lobos, who defeated Nevada twice in sweeping its way to the 2016 Mountain West Tournament title, have won five regular-season Mountain West titles in the last seven years (2011-14, 2017) and three of the last six conference tournament crowns (2011, 2012, 2016).

The early game Thursday will be No. 2 San Diego State taking on No. 3 Fresno State at 3 p.m. Both contests are rematches of series played last weekend (Nevada took two of three from UNM while Fresno State took two of three from SDSU).

Tickets are available at unmtickets.com or call 505-925-LOBO.

LAST TIME OUT FOR UNM … Though it took until the final day of the regular season, the Lobos wrapped up their fifth regular-season Mountain West championship in the last seven seasons this past weekend.

UNM entered the final weekend of the regular season with a magic number of three to win the Mountain West and got help the first night with San Diego State falling to Fresno State. However, UNM fell to Nevada – who entered this weekend needing to win two of three to take the fourth and final spot in into the MW tournament – 5-2 on Thursday. The Lobos took an early 2-0 before Nevada scored three in the third, one in the fifth and one in the seventh for the victory.

Tyler Stevens got the loss, going six innings and giving up four runs on 13 hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. Carl Stajduhar and Danny Collier had two hits and an RBI apiece – combining for four of the Lobos’ five hits.

The Lobos’ magic remained at two following Friday’s action as the Lobos fell to Nevada 17-9 and San Diego State defeated Fresno State. In UNM’s loss, Stajduhar went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, Luis Gonzalez wetn 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI while Collier, Brandon Langan and Robby Campillo had two hits apiece. Carson Schneider got the loss, going 3.1 innings and giving up nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

UNM needed some help Saturday as it had to have a San Diego State loss to Fresno State plus a win over Nevada to claim the Mountain West title.

The Lobos did their part as a go-ahead, three-run homer by senior Matt Villalobos (his first career home run – on senior day, nontheless) in the seventh inning ignited a seven-run frame to catapult UNM to a 13-6 victory. Villalobos finished 2-for-2 with a homer, double and three RBI, Jared Mang finished 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBI and Justin Watari went 2-for-2 with two runs. Johnathon Tripp picked up the win in relief, going four innings and giving up a run on five hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

The Lobos were able to celebrate their championship 15 minutes later in the clubhouse when Fresno State defeated San Diego State.
 UNM BASEBALL NOTES

  • GONZO BREAKS 37-YEAR-OLD UNM RECORD … Luis Gonzalez is one of the most dangerous hitters in the nation – and has been respected as so all season. The junior broke a UNM record that had stood since 1980 on Saturday as his three walks on Saturday gives him 58 on the season.

Gonzalez passed Mike Foote’s mark of 56 set in 1980 and is the most in the last 15 years since Matt Young walked 54 times in 2003.

Gonzalez is second in the nation in walks with 58 heading into the Mountain West Tournament, one behind D.J. Artis of Liberty.
