Spring Practice Roster and Notes

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.  — The University of New Mexico Football team probably had enough of all the meetings, all the weights, and pretty much all of everything.  On Wednesday morning, the team hit the South Practice Fields for the first of 15 Spring practices.

Last year the Lobos went 9-4 and 6-2 in the Mountain West’s Mountain Division, winning a share of their first division title since the 1997 season.  However, the Lobos have lost 14 starters from their Gildan New Mexico Bowl championship squad (four on offense, nine on defense and one specialist) and Spring ball will be a perfect time to get reps for the student-athletes replacing those players.

What New Mexico does have are plenty of bodies as 87 players participated in the first practice, including 40 players who redshirted or were non-lettering squad members last year.  Among those redshirts are 2015 letterwinners Kenneth Maxwell (DB), Delane Hart-Johnson (WR) and Romell Jordan (RB).  Also among the roster are 17 New Mexico natives, including 2016 redshirts Teton Saltes (DL), Kameron Miller (DB) and Gabe Ortega (DB) and grayshirt Marcus Williams (TE).

UNM also has nine mid-year enrollees that were a part of the 2017 National Signing Day class.  All of those numbers give UNM coaches plenty to look forward to over the course of the Spring.

The Lobos will take the field for the second of 15 Spring practices on Friday, starting at 9 a.m.  The practices are open for fans.  Fans are asked to bring some water to drink, and the best place to watch practice on in the shade of the Indoor Practice Facility, located just East of the practice fields.  Fans can bring a camping chair or just sit on the grass and watch practice.
