HOUSTON, Texas / FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The University of New Mexico women’s swimming team finished ninth out of 10 teams at the Phill Hansel Invitational in Houston, Texas on Saturday, scoring a total of 500 points.
Junior Adriana Palomino began the day with another individual win, as she finished the 1650-yard freestyle with a final time of 16:23.75. Palomino also tied her own school record in the event with her seed time, posting a 16:22.46.
Palomino, senior Madison Burns, and juniors Konoha Shinada and Carol de Groote Tavares led the Lobos in their only relay race of the day. The quartet finished in fourth place with a final time of 3:24.23.
Both Burns and Shinada gathered top-10 finishes in the 100-yard freestyle. Burns qualified eighth overall for a spot in the B-Final with a time of 50.71, then finished second in her final, 10th overall, with a time of 90.51. Shinada qualified for the A-Finals tied for seventh with a time of 50.67, then finished fourth overall with a final time of 50.40.
Junior Emily Huffer was the Lobos’ top finisher in the 200-yard butterfly, topping preliminaries with a time of 2:00.54. She then finished seventh overall with a time of 2:03.18. Freshman Klara Farkas also finished in the top-20, qualifying for the C-Finals with a time of 2:05.86. Farkas finished 18th overall, second in her final, with a time of 2:03.32.
Huffer and de Groote Tavares qualified for the B-Finals in the 200-yard backstroke. Huffer qualified 12th overall with a time of 2:00.94, while de Groote Tavares qualified 16th for the final spot in the B-Finals with a 2:01.26. Huffer than finished fourth in the finals, 12th overall, with a final time of 2:00.21 and de Groote Tavares finished second in the finals, 10th overall, with a time of 2:00.21.
Sophomore Asami Terada finished her solid weekend with an 11th place finish in the 200-yard backstroke, posting a final time of 2:18.32, finishing third in the B-Final. Terada qualified 13th with a time of 2:19.74.
The swim team also earned seven NCAA B-Cuts throughout its time in Houston. Palomino earned three, including the 500-yard freestyle, the 200-yard freestyle and the 1650-yard freestyle. Shinada earned her three cuts in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly (made cut in both preliminaries and finals). Finally, freshman Matea Sumajstorcic earned a single cut in the 500-yard freestyle.
“We had a solid weekend of racing, especially being our first three-day event of the year. We raced against some great competition with Houston and Rice, and also some conference teams like Air Force and Colorado State,” said head swimming coach Dorsey Tierney-Walker. “From a coaching perspective, it was a great meet to evaluate our progress since September with our racing execution. We also found out where we need to improve.
“I think we had solid swims across the board and we improved every day. We were led by Adriana Palomino and Koko Shinada. I think Breanna Wiercinski had a great meet, breaking several of her personal bests. She raced in more events than she ever has, including some relays. Asami Terada also had two outstanding swims in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. She broke some of her personal bests, and we are excited to continue to move forward with her.
“Overall, we are very excited with where we are at in terms of fitness level and focus level. Now we have to transition into the Christmas training season and then into the championship season.”
The diving team once again competed in a single event at the NAU Diving Invitational in Flagstaff. 32 divers competed in the 3-meter dive, with the top-12 advancing to the finals. The five Lobos competing failed to advance to the finals, with junior Allyson Concepcion being the team’s top finisher in 21st with a score of 231.05.
Freshman Hannah Tiendas and sophmore Valencia McDonald finished back-to-back in 23rd and 24th place, scoring 227.90 and 225.90 respectively. The Lobos were rounded out by sophomore Natasha Dark and junior Madeline Horner. Dark finished in 26th with a 218.95 and Horner finished in 31st with a score of 188.95.
The diving team will compete in the final day of the NAU Diving Invitational on Sunday, while the swimming team’s next event is at home, hosting the Cherry v. Silver Invite on December 2 at 10 a.m. MT.
