“There were a lot of birdies out there today,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “They eluded us, but we still had a pretty good tournament with a great top-4 finish by Ingrid.”
The Lobos were led by senior Ingrid Gutierrez who finished in fourth place after carding a total of 7-under 209 [66,74,69]. Gutierrez stayed within the top-5 over the course of the three rounds and only four-strokes separated her from the tournament winner, Oregon State’s Ellie Slama.
Junior Darian Zachek finished the three rounds with a total score of 216 [72,72,72] and this was another great reflection of how consistent her game has been since the start of this fall season. Zachek’s shining moment in Denver was her hole-in-one during the second round on Oct. 7 on hole-17. With a finish in the top-20 of the tournament, Zachek and Gutierrez led New Mexico in another great showing amongst a competitive field.
Another standout performance came from sophomore, Reva Morris who carded a total of 3-over 219 [73,71,75] in her third invitational as a Lobo. Morris ended up in the top-30 and added nine birdies to UNM’s team total of 42 over the course of these three days in Denver.
Freshman Caroline Jansson and senior, Alexandra Moisand also had respectable finishes for the Lobos and were integral to the team’s top-5 finish. Jansson ended the weekend with a total of 4-over 220 [73,74,73] and Moisand was not far behind with a score of 6-over 222 [72,75,75].
New Mexico’s individuals junior, Emma Edwards and redshirt-freshman Zoey Akagi-Bustin made a splash in Denver and held their own amongst the field for the Lobos. Edwards closed out her three rounds with a score of 19-over 235 [71,82,82] and fellow teammate, Akagi-Bustin carded 16-over 232 [75,77,80].
Tournament hosts and winners, Denver made a tournament record in their final round after earning a team score of 272 and only 14-strokes separated the champions from the Lobos. Oregon State’s Ellie Slama had an impressive individual finish with a total of 11-under 205 [67,71,67] and UNM’s Gutierrez was neck and neck with the champion the entire weekend.
The Lobos will have two weeks to prepare for the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown which will start on Oct. 22 and finish on Oct. 24. New Mexico plans on having another strong finish at their final tournament of the fall season.
