HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — After the first round at the Ron Moore’s Intercollegiate, the University of New Mexico women’s golf team found its way to the top of the leaderboard with a team score of 283. The Lobos are not alone up there, currently tournament hosts, Denver is sharing the No. 1 spot, however senior Ingrid Gutierrez is the current individual leader.

“The team held it together very well,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “Ingrid’s putter was on fire and she played awesome.”

Gutierrez cleaned up with and impressive first round score of 6-under 66 and is decisively in first place after day one. Following not that far behind her is Oregon State’s Ellie Slama with a 5-under 67 first round score. Gutierrez is showing that she can hold her own amongst the field and this course especially after earning 6 birdies on the day.

“It got windy on about our last 5-holes and it cost us a few bogeys but we also threw in some birdies at the end,” mentioned Trujillo.

This fall season has shown how strong and consistent the Lobos are when they face the competition and despite the windy conditions, senior, Alexandra Moisand and junior, Darian Zachek earned 72 on the day holding them in the top-20.

Also fielding on the team for the Lobos are freshman, Caroline Jansson and sophomore, Reva Morris who both carded a 1-over 73 on the day. Jansson and Morris are currently tied for 29th and both are looking to climb up the leaderboard tomorrow and stay within the top-30 by the end of the day tomorrow.

Not only is the team tearing it up on the green, junior, Emma Edwards who is fielding as an individual is currently tied for 11th after earning 1-under 71 after this first round. Edwards is making her second appearance as an individual for the Lobos and is making quite the splash in Denver. Red-shirt freshman, Zoey Akagi-Bustin is the second individual competing for the Lobos and earned a respectable score of 3-over 75 at the end of the day.

“This course is very scoreable and we need to be under par all three rounds to finish at the top,” said Trujillo.

As the Lobos head into the second round starting at 9 a.m. [MT] on Saturday, Oct. 7, the team will be working towards staying at the top of the heap with the goal of staying consistent and positive at the Highlands Ranch Golf Club.
