HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team is heading on up to Denver’s Ron Moore Intercollegiate to play the 6,450-yardage course at Highlands Ranch Golf Club. The three-round tournament will start on Friday, Oct. 6 and end Sunday Oct. 8.

“We had a good showing at Gonzaga,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “We worked on a few different things when we got back to help our players finish out their rounds because we keep having a few bogeys at the end.”

The Lobos are coming back from a top-5 finish at Gonzaga’s Coeur D’Alene Invitational with their final score of 10-over 862 [287,286,289]. Senior Ingrid Gutierrez had an impressive showing by landing a top in the top-10 on the leaderboard with a score of 2-under 211 [72,67,72]. Alongside Gutierrez, junior Darian Zachek came out strong with a final score of 1-over 214 [69,73,72].

“If we were able to bring our team’s par-5 scoring average back to even or better, I think we will be just fine in Denver,” mentioned Trujillo. “So far this season we have showed a lot of strength on the par 3s and minimizing big mistakes amongst our starting five.”

Fielding for the Lobos are Alexandra Moisand, Ingrid Gutierrez, Darian Zachek, Reva Morris and Caroline Jansson. These five led the charge for the Lobos in Idaho and are hoping to claim their second top-5 finish after this weekend. The two individuals for UNM are junior Emma Edwards and redshirt-freshman Zoey Akagi-Bustin. This will be Edwards and Akagi-Bustin’s second showing for the Lobos this fall season.

The tournament’s previous champions, Pepperdine, who carded 854 [280,290,284] are sharing the field with the Lobos for the second time this fall season. Not only are last year’s team champions back this year, the individual champion, junior, Sophie Newlove hailing from Denver claimed the title with a 6-under 210 final score.

“The weather in Denver will try to slow us down with some rain and colder temperatures, but it should warm up by Saturday and our team is ready to play golf in anything,” said Trujillo.

With the Lobos prepared for anything and everything, they will be teeing off at 10:20 A.M. [MT] at the Highlands Ranch Golf Club on Friday, Oct. 6.
