ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico finished off its own tournament in style, going 6-1 on the final day in singles against New Mexico State and Northern Arizona, finishing 19-3 overall for the tournament, with one of those losses coming in a match played against a UNM teammate. UNM split its four doubles matches for the third straight day and went 6-6 in doubles for the tournament.
The doubles pairing of Lauren Rich and Bronte Murgett won for the third straight day, this time winning 6-4 over NAU’s Worthy Goldman and Cora-Lynn Von Dungern. The other Lobo winners in doubles were Yue Lin “Polly” Chen and Natasha Munday, who won 6-3 over New Mexico State’s Vanessa Valdez and Helena Colvee.
In singles, UNM’s top six paired off with New Mexico State, and the Lobos swept it away, winning five matches with one match not played due to injury.
Diana Wong had the toughest time, needed three sets, but after winning the opener 6-3 and then dropping the second by an indentical score, she won the third set super-set 10-6. Ruth Copas at No. 2 was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Rebecca Keizjerwaard and Danielle Quevedo breezed past Lindsay Harlas 6-1, 6-1.
It was even easier on the scoreboard for Hsiang-Wen “Albie” Huang, who won 6-0, 6-1 over Yadira Rubio, and Lauren Rich finished a perfect weekend for her with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Helena Colvee. Bronte Murgett was denied the chance to equal Rich’s perfect 6-0 week when her match was cancelled.
Two Lobos played against Northern Arizona, with Chen winning over Worthy Goldman 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) and Natasha Munday losing 7-5, 6-4.
