ALBUQUEQUE, N.M. — Different group of opponents, but pretty much the same result. The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team once again rolled, this time on day two of the Lobo Invitiational, winning seven of eight singles matches and splitting four doubles matches, including once match where UNM played UNM. Over the first two days, UNM is now 13-2 in singles, with one of the two losses in a UNM/UNM match and 4-4 in doubles (with one UNM/UNM match).
Winning doubles matches for the second straight day were the teams of Ruth Copas and Hsiang-Wen “Albie” Huang as well as Bronte Murgett and Lauren Rich. UNM faced off with doubles teams from UTEP (with Northern Arziona and New Mexico State playing each other in doubles). UTEP has just four players at the tournament due to injury, paving the way for a fourth doubles pairing from UNM.
Copas and Huang won 6-1 while Murgett and Rich won 6-4, the latter defeating Yue Lin “Polly” Chen and Natasha Munday of UNM. The only loss was a 6-4 loss by Danielle Quevedo and Diana Wong at the No. 1 doubles slot.
In singles, UNM took five of six matches from Northern Arizona, and two of two from New Mexico State. Ruth Copas, who won in a third-set super set yesterday, again needed three sets after dropping the opening set, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 over Eirene Granville at No. 2 singles. UNM, which lost 4-3 to Northern Arizona last year, cruised in the 3-6 singles flights. Quevedo, having a terrific Fall, won again, this 6-4, 62- over Madi Moore. Huang took a 6-2, 6-4 win over Cora-Lynn Von Dungern at No. 4 singles.
Bronte Murgett continued her perfect tournament with a 6-1, 6-1 blitzing of Ellie Millard and Lauren Rich won 6-2, 6-2 over Worthy Goldman. UNM’s Munday and Chen took the place of UTEP’s Nos. 5 and 6 singles players, and picked up wins over NMSU. Munday won 7-5, 6-2 over NMSU’s Eli Arnaudova in her first singles match of the tournament, and Chen won 6-1, 6-2 over Helena Colvee.
The tournament concludes on Sunday with the Lobos taking on Northern Arizona in doubles at 10 a.m. at McKinnon (with NMSU and UTEP squaring off as well) before UNM takes on the singles pairings from New Mexico State. Those matches will be at McKinnon while Northern Arizona and UTEP will play at Estes.
