LAS VEGAS, N.V. — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team finished its final tournament of the fall season in eighth place at the UNLV’s Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown with a final team score of 17-over 881 [283,292,306].

“The wind got the best of us today,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “Ingrid and Caroline had a great tournament despite blustery conditions.”

New Mexico came out to Las Vegas with high hopes of finishing their final tournament of the 2017 fall season in the top-5 for the third time, however after playing in some windy conditions, the Lobos had to settle for a top-10 finish. Leading for the Lobos since the first round was senior, Ingrid Gutierrez who finished in the top-5 with a final score of 5-under 211 [66,69,76]. Gutierrez had a rocky start at the beginning of this fall season and she was finding herself in the middle of the pack after the first tournament at home, the annual Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire where she tied for 33rd amongst the players. The seasoned Lobo loosened the hinges a bit and has been climbing up each tournament’s leaderboard since the team’s home invitational.

Gutierrez was not the only Lobo that performed well this last tournament, freshman, Caroline Jansson carded a total of par-216 [70,73,73] and she finished in the top-20 for New Mexico. The Swedish native signed with UNM in November 2016 and she brought an impressive player resume with her as well. Jansson has qualified for each tournament this fall and has consistently played very well for the Lobos. With her 13-birdies over these three rounds, she helped the Lobos find a respectable total of 42-birdies.

Junior Darian Zachek carded a score of 11-over 227 [75,75,77] and had yet another consistent tournament for the Lobos. Zachek has had a strong showing in this fall season with scores that have been staying very close to par. Fellow teammate, sophomore Reva Morris ended her first fall season as a Lobo with a total of 16-over 232 [72,75,85]. Morris joined the roster at the beginning of this fall season and has made an impact for the team as a qualifier for each tournament thus far. Senior, Alexandra Moisand has fielded for UNM each invitational this fall and ended her final fall season as a Lobo with a total score of 17-over 233 [76,77,80].

The two individuals for the Lobos were junior, Emma Edwards and redshirt-freshman, Zoey Akagi-Bustin and this is both their third showing for the 2017 fall season. Edwards, who had a strong showing on the green for New Mexico, carded a total score of 10-over 226 [74,75,77]. Akagi-Bustin finished the last fall tournament for the Lobos with a total score of 21-over 237 [78,75,84].

With the fall semester winding down for the team, UNM will be taking a long break until they hit the road again for the first tournament of the 2018 spring season where they will be heading back to Las Vegas, Nevada for The Rebel/Beach Invitational hosted by UNLV and Long Beach State on Feb. 26th.
