New Mexico Game Notes | Wyoming Game Notes | Mountain West Weekly Notes
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Every week is a challenge in the Mountain West, especially in the Mountain Division. Whether readyng for the option offense of Air Force, or having to play on the blue turf in Boise, every game is a tough challenge. This week, it’s a matchup with Wyoming and a quarterback who might be a top draft choice in the 2018 NFL Draft. Every week has its challenges, and this week’s challenge might be the toughest yet.
The Lobos will head to Laramie, Wyoming, where the temperatures will be chilly, not frigid, as UNM takes on Wyoming in a key Mountain West matchup at 5:32 p.m. on ESPNU.
Bob Davie certainly knows the challenge ahead. “They’re good. You look at who they lost to. They lost to Iowa, they lost to Oregon at home, and they lost to Boise State,” said Davie.
The key matchup and factor is undoubtedly Josh Allen, a quarterback that is physically imposing and can do it all, throwing and running. “Anytime you play somebody that is as talented as he is, and they know how to win. They got over the hump last year. A lot of people say (Allen) will be the first player drafted. Physically he is unique (and) when the game is on the line when they need, he will run the ball. There’s no back down and there’s no worrying about next May and the NFL Draft. He’s a guy that looks for contact. I have a lot of respect for him.”
The Lobos are coming off a close 27-24 loss to Colorado State, a game in which UNM recovered an onside kick with 22 seconds left but couldn’t quite get close enough for a tying field goal try. Wyoming is coming off a 24-14 loss to Boise State, putting both teams in a position of needing to get back in the win column.
The game continues a tough final stretch of the season where UNM faces the two participants in last year’s Mountain West Championship Game (playing San Diego State at the end of the season) along with an SEC road trip to Texas A&M.
