LAS VEGAS, N.V. — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team is currently in fourth place after totaling 283 at UNLV’s Las Vegas Showdown at the Boulder Creek Golf Course.
“It was relatively good day,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “Small mistakes got us on a few holes, which took away from our 21-birdies.”
Leading for the Lobos is Ingrid Gutierrez who is currently in second place after carding 6-under 66 in her first round. Only one stroke is separating Gutierrez from the current tournament leader, Missouri’s Emma Allen who scored 7-under 65. Gutierrez is looking to stay within the top-5 for her second tournament in a row.
“Ingrid’s round was fantastic,” mentioned Trujillo. “A bogey free 66 is tough.”
Freshman Caroline Jansson, who is only four strokes over her teammate Gutierrez, totaled 2-under 70 after the first round. Jansson carded five birdies to add to the team’s total of 21-birdies after day one in Vegas. Sophomore Reva Morris, carded an impressive six birdies with her first round total of par-72. Both of these two new Lobos have been making quite a splash this fall season and they are looking to climb up the leaderboard these next two rounds.
Junior Darian Zachek was 3-over 75 to end the day and she claimed three birdies for the team. Closing out for the team was senior Alexandra Moisand who finished her first round with a score of 4-over 76.
The two individuals for the Lobos are junior, Emma Edwards and redshirt-freshman, Zoey Akagi-Bustin who both ended their first rounds with respectable scores. Edwards carded 2-over 74 and claimed 2 birdies on the day. Akagi-Bustin worked hard amongst the competition earned 4 birdies on the day after totaling at 6-over 78 on the day.
“We need to be a little more focused tomorrow and we’ll take it lower,” said Trujillo.
New Mexico will be hitting the green tomorrow with another shotgun start at 8 a.m. [PT].
