LAS VEGAS, N.V. — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team fell to sixth after a difficult second round at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown on Monday, Oct. 23.
“It was not our best performance,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “The wind picked up and we lost some shots which hurt us.”
New Mexico was holding the fourth position on the leaderboard after day one with a team total of 283 but after scoring 9-strokes over their round one score, the Lobos fell into sixth place with a new team total of [283,292] 1-under 575.
Even though the conditions were not ideal, senior Ingrid Gutierrez, is still sitting in second on the leaderboard after another successful round on day two in Vegas. Gutierrez scored an impressive 6-under 66 in her first round and followed with a 3-under 69 giving her an individual total of 135. She is currently tied for second with Missouri’s Emma Allen who was in first place after the first round and only one stroke separated her from Gutierrez on Sunday, Oct. 22.
Freshman Caroline Jansson had another strong day amongst the field and is still in the top-30 for the tournament. Jansson ended the second day with a score of 1-over 73 giving her a new total of 143 [70,73] after these two rounds. Following Jansson is sophomore, Reva Morris who is trying to meet her teammate in the top-30 after carding a 3-over 147 [72,75] after both rounds. Junior, Darian Zachek had a repeat of her first round score after totaling at 3-over 75 for the second day in a row. Zachek has a current total of 150 [75,75] and only three strokes separates her from senior, Alexandra Moisand who carded 9-over 153 [76,77] after day two.
Leading for the New Mexico individuals is junior, Emma Edwards who is currently 5-over 149 [74,75] after her second round. Redshirt-freshman, Zoey Akagi-Bustin improved her score by three strokes after the first round and has a total score of 9-over 153 [78,75].
Current tournament leaders and hosts, UNLV has made quite the gap in between them and the field with a team total of 21-under 555 [277,278]. In total, 20-strokes and five places on the leaderboard separates UNLV from New Mexico.
The Lobos will be heading into the final round on Tuesay, Oct. 24 with another shotgun start at 8 a.m. [PT].
