LAS VEGAS, N.V. — The leaves are falling, the temperatures are dropping and the University of New Mexico women’s golf team’s fall season is coming to an end. It’s final fall tournament is the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown hosted by UNLV.
“Boulder Creek is a course we know well,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “The scores are typically very low so we need to go low.”
This isn’t the first time the Lobos will be competing at the Boulder Creek Golf Course, it was just last fall in the 2016-17 season that New Mexico played in the Showcase and claimed a 16th place finish. UNM carded a total of 583 and were 32-strokes from the tournament champions, Baylor with 551.
Coming back for the Lobos are seniors Ingrid Gutierrez, Alexandra Moisand and juniors, Darian Zachek and Emma Edwards. Gutierrez found 4-birdies and totaled at 146 and only 8-strokes separated Gutierrez from teammate Moisand who carded 154. Junior, Edwards came in second for the most birdies for the Lobos totaling at five in the final round and scored an overall 155 last season in Vegas.
Zachek, who was only 2-strokes away from the New Mexico leader, Eva Saulnier, she coming away with six birdies and a total score 143. Zachek is been one of the leaders for the team this fall season and she is hopeful to have another consistent and strong showing for the Lobos.
As the Lobos head into the first round on Oct. 22, they are hopeful that the weather allows them to compete all three days. Last season due to various lightning and fog delays the Lobos not only played the field but the mental game of having their rounds postponed.
“We’ve had 3 great showings this fall and we’re ready for UNLVs event,” mentioned Trujillo.
The Lobos are taking the field at Noon [PT] for their shotgun start on Sunday, Oct. 22.
