ALBUQUEQRUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team finished the first day of its annual Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire tied for 9th place with a team score of 8-over 584.
 
Leading for the Lobos is junior Darian Zachek who is currently tied for 3rd at 3-under 141 [69, 72]. Zachek had the best finish for the Lobos at this same tournament last year, however this year she has improved in these first two rounds by 6 strokes in total. Currently she is tied with three other players who are also in the top-five teams on the leaderboard.
 
The two Lobo seniors, Alexandra Moisand and Ingrid Guiterrez struggled through the first round but slowly started to improve nearing the end of the second round. Moisand ended the day with 4-over 148 [74,74] and carded five birdies. Gutierrez had a hard time in the back nine of round one where she hit a triple-bogey adding to her end of day total, 5-over 149 [77,72].
 
Sophomore-transfer Reva Morris is getting her first taste of competition as a Lobo this tournament and after a rough first round, she started to gain some traction ending the day with 6-over 150 [79, 71]. Emma Edwards rounds out the team with a first day score of 9-over 153 [75, 78].
 
UNM is also fielding two individuals, freshman Caroline Jansson who carded 2-over 146 [74, 72] and red-shirt freshman Zoey Akagi-Bustin who totaled at 15-over 159 [80, 79]. Jansson earned five birdies after day one and is currently tied for 28th while being in the lead amongst all the individuals fielded.
 
The tournament lead is being held by previous champion, Oklahoma State with 1-under 575 [291, 284], however Arizona is not too far behind with par-576 [292, 284] after day one. Arizona also is fielding the current tournament standout and current leader, Bianca Pagdanganan who ended at 10-under 134 [67,67] after both rounds.
 
All 18 teams will start the final round at 7:30 a.m. [MST] at the UNM Championship Golf Course on Sept. 12.
