COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Mountain West announced its 2016-17e Men’s Golf All-Conference team and individual awards today as selected by the 11 head coaches and for the second consecutive year University of New Mexico men’s golfer Andrej Bevins has been named as an All-Conference selection.
Just prior to the Mountain West’s All-Conference and Individual award announcements on Thursday, Bevins recorded a T11 finish at the MW Championships at the 2017 Mountain West Men’s Golf Championship at the Catalina Course at Omni Tucson National in Tucson, Arizona.
On the year, Bevins — the team’s lone senior — recorded 39 competitive rounds, and carried a team-best 72.31 scoring average. For his career, Bevins carries a 73.14 scoring average, and this season dropped 1.11 strokes on his 2016-17 in comparison to his 2015-16 campaign.
In addition he also recorded his season-best performance at The Maxwell, a T4 performance. He also notched a top 5 at the 3M Augusta Invitational.
Bevins’ low-round mark of 67 was good enough to land him inside the top 10 percent across all men’s Division I golfers. He led the team in final-round scoring, with an average of 71.77, nearly two strokes better than any other golfer at UNM. This year, he’s recorded six rounds in the 60’s, and 22 rounds of par or better.
As a ode to his consistency, Bevins ended the MW regular-season in par-3 and par-4 scoring, carrying averages of 3.19 and 4.09 respectively. He missed out on leading the team in par-5 scoring by two one-hundredths.
Bevins showcased his skill set with his iron play throughout the year, en route to leading the team in greens-in-regulation percentage (71.8%). He also ranked 25th in the nation in par-3 GIR percentage, carrying a mark of 68.6%.
As for the rest of the awards, UNLV junior John Oda earned Mountain West Golfer of the Year honors, Brian Humphreys of Boise State was named the MW Freshman of the Year and MW Coach of the Year honors were awarded to Dwaine Knight of UNLV.
Oda becomes the fourth Rebel golfer in program history to earn Conference Player of the Year honors and is the first since Derek Ernst collected the honor in 2010 and 2011. Humphreys becomes the first golfer in Boise State history to earn an MW postseason individual award since the Broncos joined the league prior to the 2011-12 season.
Knight earned his second-career MW Coach of the Year honor and first since 2002. He led UNLV to its second-consecutive Mountain West Championship title and fourth in program history last weekend.
The 2016-17 MW Men’s Golf All-Conference team consists of 10 individuals. Oda and 2016 Mountain West Golfer of the Year Nahum Mendoza III (Sr.) of San Diego State earned All-Conference accolades for the third-straight year. New Mexico senior Andrej Bevins, junior Shintaro Ban of UNLV and Rebels’ sophomore Harry Hall garnered inclusion on the squad for the second year in a row. Wyoming senior Ryan Wallen is the fourth player overall in program history and first since Gabe Maier in 2011 to be named to the all-Conference squad. Sophomore Jake Staiano becomes the first Colorado State golfer to garner all-league honors since Ryan Peterson in 2011, while Humphreys is just the second Bronco ever to be tabbed to the team.
