TUCSON, Ariz. – After day two of the 2017 Mountain West Championships, the University of New Mexico men’s golf team held fast en route to finishing the day once again in 5th place at 1-under 575 (288-287).
Andrej Bevins (69-72) still leads the Lobos. Through 54 holes he sits in a tie for 8th place at 3-under 141. Bevins’ day got off to a hot start. His opening nine included four birdies with back-to-back on holes 8-9. However, he struggled coming home, playing the final three holes in 2-over fashion.
Bevins is leading the field in par-3 scoring, carrying an average of 2.63. He also carries the third-lowest par-5 scoring average as well (4.50).
Andre Garcia (71-71) pieced together a consistent day that included five total birdies, along with consecutive birdies to open his homeward nine. He was able to avoid any big numbers, and eventually ended the day as part of a group tied for 11th at 2-under 142.
Garcia is sitting just outside the tournament’s top 10 thanks to strong statistical performances on the par-5s, where he’s currently carrying the third-lowest scoring average (4.50). In addition, Garcia thus far has also carded the fourth-lowest average on the par-3s (3.13).
Gustavo Morantes showed the most improvement for the Lobos today, shaving seven strokes off yesterday’s total. Thanks to that, he jumped 15 spots up the leaderboard today thanks to his 3-under 69. Morantes’ included a stretch of three birdies in five holes making the turn today, which allowed him to finish in a three-way tie for 26th through 54 holes at 3-over 145 (76-69).
Sean Carlon’s day was the quietest of the Lobo group. However struggles on the closing stretch forced him to give up some ground on the field. Despite those struggles, Carlon only dropped eight spots on the leaderboard. He finished the day at 5-over 149, and tied for 41st.
Benjamin Tolsma struggled on his opening nine, yet found some consistency over the course of his last nine holes on the day. Eventually Tolsma finished at 7-over 151 overall and in sole possession of 45th.
Uncharacteristically, the Lobos have the worst par-5 scoring average in the field thus far this week at 4.85. However, UNM is currently carrying the second-lowest par-3 scoring average in the field (3.13).
Colorado State broke out of a log-jam atop the leaderboard last this afternoon. The Rams sit at 13-under 563, two shots clear of both Boise State and the Rebels of UNLV.
CSU’s mark of 8-under as a team today was good for the lowest team score on the day. Also, the mark was the team’s lowest championship score since 2010. This is the second-consecutive year that CSU has held the lead heading into the final round of competition.
As for the medalist competition, Brian Humphreys of Boise State crept one stroke ahead of day-one leader John Oda to lead the Championships at 9-under 135.
