TUCSON, Ariz. The University of New Mexico men’s golf team set the pace early this morning, and finished the day at even-par 288 and in 5th place at the 2017 Mountain West Championships.

The team was led on the day by the strong performance of Andrej Bevins, who has found this game throughout the latter portions of this spring season. Bevins’ day included a lone bogey, on his opening hole of the day, and was complimented by four total birdies. He played holes 12-15 in three-under fashion and propelled himself into 4th place overall at 3-under.

Currently, Bevins holds top 5 statistical averages in par 3 (2.75), par 4 (4.00) and par 5 (4.50) scoring.

Next up for the Lobos is Andre Garcia, who got off to a hot start on the day and used that momentum to stay near the top of the leaderboard throughout the rest of the day. Garcia been his day with three-consecutive birdies, thanks to that he finds himself at 1-under overall and in a seven-way tie for 12th.

A pair of Lobos finished at 2-over and as parts of a mash-up of competitors in 33rd.

Leading off that list is sophomore Sean Carlon, who sits after day one, where he finished at last year’s MW Championships. His performance today started off nicely, but he stumbled on the homeward nine. Uncharacteristically, Carlon struggled on the par 5s, but put together solid performances on the day’s par 4s, where he carried an average of 4.00.

Benjamin Tolsma joins Carlon in 33rd position. His day was a mark of consistency, on the day he played the first 10 holes on 1-under. However he struggled coming home, in spite of his missteps he managed to piece together the third-lowest par 3 scoring average in the field.

Rounding out the list of Lobo competitors is Gustavo Morantes, who’s 4-over mark landed him in a tie for 41st overall.

After 18 holes of competition, sitting atop the leaderboard are the Aztecs of San Diego State and the Broncos of Boise State at 9-under 279. Sitting two shots short is UNLV to round out the top 3.

On the individual side, John Oda of UNLV is leading the pack. He sits two shots clear of Ryan Wallen out of Wyoming.

Teams are set to go off at 8 a.m. MT tomorrow morning. Live scoring will be provided here
