Lobos Snatch Another Top-5

EDMOND, OK — The 2017 installment of The Maxwell is in the books, and after 54 holes of competition the University of New Mexico men’s golf team carded a tie for second finish at 15-over 855 (280-289-286).
 
UNM head coach Glen Millican was pleased with the team’s performance, “really good job again this week. We stayed patient in some tough weather on a good course” Millican said.
 
Leading off the Lobos is Andrej Bevins (76-68-68), who carded a 2-under 68 today en route to finishing in a two-way tie for fourth at 2-over 212 overall.  His two recovering rounds allowed him to rallying for yet another top 5 this season. Bevins excelled on the par-3’s this week, carrying the second-lowest scoring average with a mark of 2.92.
 
Another Andre but together a solid performance this week, Andre Garcia recorded another collegiate top 20 finish. Despite the difficult conditions, managed to finish at 6-over overall, and as part of the trio tied for 16th.
 
Next up on the Lobo leaderboard is sophomore Sean Carlon (66-76-72), who, despite struggling just before making the turn today, was able to put together a top 10 performance. His mark of 4-over 214 landed him in a six-way tie for 10th.
 
Carlon managed the second-lowest par-4 scoring average (4.03), and a top 5 scoring performance on the week’s par-3’s (3.17).
 
Gustavo Morantes (74-75-72), who carried the third-lowest par-3 scoring average in the field at (3.00), carded a 2-over 72 today, and eventually finished in seven-way for 33rd overall at 11-over 221.
 
Samuel Kim struggled on his homeward nine, and finished the day at 5-over,11-over overall, joining Morantes as part of the seven-way tie for 33rd. A high for Kim came on the statistical side, where me showcased power en route to carrying the second-lowest par-5 scoring average in the field at 4.17.
 
Obviously, if you finish tied for second, you put together a solid statistical performance across the board, both individually and as a team. Along with all the aforementioned noteworthy statical accomplishments, UNM dominated on the par-3’s this week as evidence day their team cumulative scoring average of 3.12.
 
In addition, by tying for the second-lowest par-5 team average at 4.53, as well as carrying the second most eagles in the field, while also recording the most birdies in the field.
 
This year’s team championship was captured by co-host Oklahoma State. The Cowboys finished six strokes clear of the Lobos this week. They accomplished this by having three players finish inside the tournament’s top 20.
 
As for the medalist portion of the competition, UCLA’s  Hidetoshi Yoshihara led wire-to-wire this week. His 1-under overall mark of 209 was good enough to finish a stroke clear of would-be contender Viktor Hovland out of Oklahoma State.
 
The Maxwell wrapped-up UNM’s regular season schedule. Next up for the Lobos are the Mountain West Championships. Once again, the the course assignment is the Omni Tucson National Resort & Golf Club.
