AUGUSTA, GA — The 2017 installment of the 3M Augusta Invitational Hosted by Augusta University is in the books and the UNM men’s golf team secured another top-5 finish.

The Lobos finished at 2-under on the day and 21-under 843 overall (283-274-286) and in sole possession of 3rd place.

UNM stayed its course from the day previous, finishing the tournament with three Lobos inside the top-10.

That trio was led by the performance of Andrej Bevins (70-67-71-208), who after carding a 1-over 37 on the front nine, recovered quickly with two consecutive birdies on his homeward nine. At day’s end Bevins finished 1-under for the day, 8-under overall and in fifth-place.

For the week, Bevins carded the second-lowest par-4 scoring average (3.87) and fourth-lowest par-5 scoring mark (4.50).

The second installment of the top-10 trio is Andre Garcia (70-68-73-211). Garcia’s day was marked by opening and closing with birdies. Outside of that, he managed the fourth-lowest par-3 (3.08) and the third-lowest par-4  (3.90) scoring averages. After the 54 holes of competition Garcia was part of a six-way tie for 10th at 5-under overall.

The third member of the top-10 Lobo lineup was Sophomore Sean Carlon (69-70-72-211), who showed off his trademark consistency once again en route another collegiate top-10 finish. His 5-under mark pushed him into joining fellow Lobo Andre Garcia inside the top-10.

Samuel Kim (75-74-70-219) was the biggest Lobo leaper today, moving up 15 spots on the leaderboard thanks to his lowest round of the week, a 2-under par 70. Kim recorded only one bogey today, on the par-5 9th, and offset that setback with three birdies on his final stretch. Those three included consecutive birdies to close out the day on 17 and 18.

Rounding out UNM’s quintet is Gustavo Morantes (74-69-77-220) who struggled on the day and eventually finished in at four-way tie for 51st at 4-over 220 overall.

On the statistical side, UNM posted solid numbers once again. The team recorded the second-most eagles in the field, 168 total pars — good for fourth-most in the field — and 56 total birdies.

This year’s team champion was UCF at 28-under 836. Their 11-under mark on the day was the lowest cumulative team round of the tournament.

Wake Forrest claimed second alone, four shots shy of UCF and three shots clear of UNM.

Illinois’ Dylan Meyer claimed this year’s medalist honors, finishing the week at 11-under 205, one shot clear of Wake Forest’s Will Zalatoris. Meyer lead wire-to-wire this week.

Next up for the Lobos is the Perry Maxwell Invitational April 15-16.
