LAS VEGAS, Nev. — After 54 holes of competition at the Southern Highlands Intercollegiate, the University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished at 34-over 898 and in sole possession of 13th-place.

This year’s Lobo effort was led by the performance of Andrej Bevins (77-71-71-219), who carded consecutive 1-under 71’s en route to his 3-over tournament mark. At day’s end, Bevins stood in a four-way tie for 21st. His day was highlighted by his three birdies on his homeward nine, two of which came in a three-hole span, allowing him to climb 11 spots up the leaderboard.

Next up was sophomore Samuel Kim (71-74-75-220), whose tournament performance led him to a tie for 25th. For the week, Kim continued to showcase his power, playing this week’s par-5’s in 4-under fashion and carrying the third-lowest scoring average in the field (4.67).

Andre Garcia (77-72-82) and Gustavo Morantes (73-79-79) continued to stay together on the leaderboard, both players finished tied for 63rd at 15-over 231 overall.

Rounding out the pack is Sean Carlon (75-79-81-235), who struggled on the day, but did manage to record a birdie on the difficult par-4 5th. As for his tournament standing, Carlon finished in 70th alone at 19-over.

Statistically, the Lobos notched another solid par-5 scoring performance, managing the sixth-lowest cumulative team average. The team also carded 35 total birdies throughout the tournament, and Kim led the field in par-3 scoring average at 2.75.

This year’s team crown was once again claimed by the Trojans of USC. This is the team’s second-consecutive title, and its margin of victory this year was 10 strokes. The Trojan effort was helped along by three players managing top-15 performances, and by shooting the lowest cumulative team score on the opening day of competition.

Oklahoma State came in second place and was led by the efforts of two players finishing inside the top-10. Rounding out the top three was Texas Tech who finished four strokes outside of the 1-under mark set by the Cowboys.

Individually, this year’s medalist was Grant Hirschman of Oklahoma, who bested Collin Morikawa in a sudden-death playoff.

Up next for the Lobos is the Lone Star Invitational on Mar. 20-21.
