Lobos Finish 6th Behind Trio of Bevins, Carlon and Morantes

SAN ANTONIO — The 2017 Lone Star Invitational is in the books, and the University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished alone in 6th place at 11-under 853.
 
The Lobos carded a 9-under cumulative team score today, good for their lowest round of the week. Three Lobos finished inside the top-25, and another was able to crack the top-30.
 
A trio of Lobos landed at 2-under 214 for the tournament.
 
Leading off the list is Andrej Bevins (72-69-73), who had a quite day, opening with a pair of early bogeys, but finished with a birdie on the homeward stretch. Bevins’ performance on the par-3s this week was good enough to land him inside the top-5 in scoring average, along with top-10 averages in par-4 (4.10) and par-5 (4.58) scoring as well.
 
He also recorded the second-most pars in the field this week.
 
In the middle of the UNM’s pack is Sean Carlon (69-72-73), who closed the day strong, carding an eagle and birdie en route to closing out his round 3-under over the last five holes.
 
The highlight of his week came in his performance on the par-5’s, which he played in 9-under fashion. That mark translates to a 4.25 cumulative average, good for third-lowest in the field.
 
Carlon also managed the fourth-lowest par-3 scoring average in the field (3.00).
 
Rounding out UNM’s highlight performers is Gustavo Morantes (73-72-69), who struck gold today. He tallied back-to-back birdies on two separate occasions, in addition to a steak of three-consecutive birdies on holes 4-6.
 
His statistical highlight came in his top-5 par-3 scoring average (3.17). However he also pieced together solid performances on the par-4’s (4.00) and par-5’s as well (4.67).
 
Samuel Kim (73-74-68) recorded the low-Lobo round on the day. His 4-under mark today was the third-lowest on the day, and enabled him to vault 24 spots up the leaderboard. Kim showcased his power this week, as evidenced by his 4.50 par-5 scoring average, good for sixth-lowest in the field.
 
Characteristically, his momentum on the par-5’s translated into consistency on the par-3’s and par-4’s, where he carried 3.25 and 4.07 averages respectively. In lieu of all this, Kim found himself at 1-under 215, and joined a seven-way tie for 30th.
 
Suitably, Andre Garcia (78-74-69) also found his stride today, recording his low round of the week. His 3-under mark today was propelled by three birdies in four holes to open his back nine, in addition to consecutive birdies on 16-17.
 
After the dust had settled, Garcia has shot 15 spots up the leaderboard, eventually ending at 5-over 221 and in a share of 55th overall.
 
As for team statistics, UNM once again showcased is premier par-5 scoring ability, tallying a 26-under mark for the week. That cumulative score translates to a 4.57 average, the fourth-lowest in the field. UNM also managed a top-3 performances in total eagles and birdies.
 
On the performance for the week, UNM head coach Glen Millican said the team performed better today. He continued on saying, “it was a nice final round. The entire team was excellent today.”
 
The Sooners of Oklahoma were crowned this year’s champion. Their 40-under mark was four shots clear of runner-up Illinois. While Mississippi State rounds out the top-3, landing nine strokes outside of 2nd.
 
This year’s medalist was Max McGreevy of Oklahoma, who’s 20-under mark outpaced the would-be contenders by six strokes.
