SAN ANTONIO — After the first day of competition of the 2017 Lone Star Invitational, the University of New Mexico men’s golf team sits in a tie for sixth place at 4-under overall.
The Lobos have two players sitting inside the tournament’s top 20 in Andrej Bevins (72-69) and Sean Carlon (69-72). They both are tied for 15th position overal and claimed the title of low Lobos after the first 36 holes.
Bevins’ opening round was fairly uneventful and saw him finish at even-par, despite an eagle on the par-5 13th to recover from the bogey he carded on the long par-4 12th.
However, this afternoon’s session was far more electric. His hot start was helped along by recording three birdies in his first five holes, along with tallying consecutive birdies on 13-14.
As for Carlon, his day couldn’t have gotten off to a better start. He opened with an eagle on the par-5 5th, his second hole of the day. After this, he recorded back-to-back birdies on holes 7-8 to close out his opening six holes in 4-under fashion. Carlon then made three birdies in a four-hole stretch, but stumbled coming into the clubhouse.
His afternoon was much of the same, with four birdies in his first seven holes. However, unfortunately, so was his closing effort. At day’s end, Carlon sits in a six-way tie for 15th at 3-under 141 overall.
Next up in the line of contention is Gustavo Morantes (73-72), who opened his day with a birdie, while also carding birdies on 14-15 to help close out his opening 18. However, some late-round stumbles led to some lost momentum heading into the clubhouse, which he recovered from nicely by recording three birdies in his opening seven holes. Despite the day’s leaps and valleys, Morantes’ standing is well within reason. He heads into tomorrow in a 11-way tie for 38th at 1-over 145.
Samuel Kim (73-74) had the most colorful day for UNM, his 11 total birdies were offset a few missteps, including a pair of triple-bogeys on the day. In lieu of all that excitement, Kim sits in a three-way tie for 56th at 3-over 147.
Wrapping up the list of Lobo competitors is Andre Garcia (78-74) who is sitting at 8-over 152 and in a two-way tie for 72nd.
After the gauntlet of the opening day 36, UNM has solid statistical footing, carrying the third-lowest par-3 scoring average (3.13), a 4.60 par-5 scoring average and tallied the second-most birdies in the field.
