SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The 2017 installment of the Lamkin San Diego Classic is in the books, and the University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished in a tie for 5th place at even-par 864 (284-290-290). The team was two shots outside of a joining a three-way tie for second place and 2-under overall.
The Lobos were lead by senior Andrej Bevins, who was one of three UNM players to finish inside top-25. Bevins began his day slowly, playing 1-over through his first three holes, but he recovered nicely and finished out his opening nine with three consecutive birdies. He also managed to play the week’s par-3’s in even-par fashion, the third lowest average in the field, and carried a scoring average of 4.58 on the par-5’s.
The tandem of Gustavo Morantes (73-71-73) and Sean Carlon (71-73-73) finished as two parts of the four-way tie for 24th at 1-over 217. Morantes’ day concluded with a pair birdies and an eagle in his final five holes. In addition, Morantes also carried the second-lowest par-5 scoring average in the field (4.42). As for Carlon, his day was marked by his trademark consistency, helping him to finish the tournament with the third-lowest par-3 and fifth-lowest par-5 scoring averages.
Next up was Samule Kim (71-75-75), who recorded two birdies in a three-hole stretch during the middle portion of his homeward nine, and eventually finished in a seven-way tie for 43rd. Kim’s statistical highpoint was marked by his efforts on this week’s par-4’s, where he finished the tournament with the fourth-lowest scoring average.
Rounding out the Lobo lineup is Andre Garcia, who’s day started off with a bang. He opened his round with an eagle two on the par-4 first. Garcia recovered nicely from Monday’s struggles, and pieced together a round that moved him up the leaderboard and into a tie for 55th, which he shared with two other players.
As for the team’s statistics, UNM finished with the fourth-lowest par-3 (3.15) and fifth-lowest par-4 (4.13) scoring averages in the field. In addition, the team also notched a 17-under mark on the week’s par-5’s. The Lobos also carded 48 total birdies and four eagles, good for the most in the field.
This year’s team champion was the University of Mississippi, which scored its way to the team title. On the day, the 28th-ranked squad carded a 15-under 273, the lowest team tournament round on the week. North Carolina, Middle Tennessee St., and Texas round out the top-3. The three aforementioned teams all finished in a tie for 2nd at 2-under 862.
This year’s medalist is Ben Wolcott of Mississippi. Wolcott shot a 5-under 67 today, his lowest round of the week, en route to finishing three shots clear of the Texas tandem of Gavin Hall and Scottie Scheffler.
