San Diego, CA — After the first day of competition at the 2017 Lamkin San Diego Classic the University of New Mexico men’s golf team found itself in sole possession of 3rd place at 1-under 284.
The Lobo leaderboard is topped by the duo of Sean Carlon (71) and Andrej Bevins (71-72), both of whom sit in a tie for 14th overall at 1-under. Carlon, who still has one hole to play to finish his second round, got off to a quick start, recording two birdies and an eagle. That stretch of 4-under in six holes propelled him inside the tournament’s top-10 after the opening 18.
As for Bevins, he recorded five birdies during his opening 18-hole performance and fired off another four during his afternoon portion. Bevins is also tied atop the leaderboard for par-3 scoring, finishing the day with a 2.75 average.
Next up for the Lobos is Gustavo Morantes (73-72), who is currently in a nine-way tie for 25th at 1-over overall. His day was easily the most eventful of the Lobos. Through his first two rounds he recorded 10 total birdies and an eagle, along with a stretch of 4-under in five holes during his afternoon portion. Morantes is currently tied for the lowest par-3 scoring average (2.75), and carries the fourth-lowest par-5 scoring average (4.50).
Samuel Kim (71-75) is looking to back up last year’s second-place performance and find himself in good position after day one. Currently Kim sits in a six-way tie for 34th at 2-over 146. Despite some struggles in consistency, Kim thus far has managed to record the third-lowest par-4 scoring average in the field (3.95).
Statistically speaking, the Lobos are showing strong signs of improvement from last week’s performance. Currently the team is carrying the lowest par-3 scoring average, and played the par-5’s in 10-under fashion through the fist 36. The team also has the second most birdies and eagles in the field.
