LAS VEGAS, Nev. –
The first day of the Southern Highlands Intercollegiate is in the books, and after 18 holes of action in the desert the University of New Mexico men’s golf team is sitting in 13th position at 8-over 296.

UNM head coach Glen Millican began his assessment of the day saying, “Not too bad today. Nice job by [Samuel] Kim shooting 32 on his back nine. Gustavo and Carlon played solid. Garcia and Bevins didn’t get a whole lot going but are both playing good and capable of shooting good scores tomorrow.”

The Lobo effort on the day was led by sophomore Kim who carded a 1-under mark of 71 en route to finishing the day in a 11-way tie for 12th.

Kim’s day got hotter as the day went on. After struggling on his opening nine, he carded a pair of birdies in his first four holes on the back nine.

He continued to rebound nicely throughout homeward stretch, including consecutive birdies to close out his day. Kim is currently carrying the second-lowest par-3 scoring average in the field at 2.75, along with tallying the third-most birdies in the field (5), and is tied for the lowest scoring average on par-5’s (4.25).

Next up for the Lobos on the day was Gustavo Morantes who carded a 1-over 73 today. Morantes managed four total birdies on the day, but struggled coming home despite carrying a 4.25 par-5 scoring average along with teammate Samuel Kim. Eventually he found himself tied for 29th with 13 other players.

Sean Carlon’s day got off to a fast start with two birdies in the first five holes, which helped him to make the turn at 1-under. Coming home however he saw some struggles, managing to card only one birdie on his homeward nine. After his effort on the day, Carlon found himself T50 at 3-over.

Rounding out the list of Lobo competitors were Andre Garcia and Andrej Bevins, both of whom finished the day at 5-over and two of the five players at T64.

Garcia’s day began with adversity, and while through consistent play he managed to only make a few more mistakes through the rest of his day. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to gain any momentum other than gaining a shot back on the par-5 9th to close out his opening nine.

Bevins’ day also was rocky. He managed only one birdie on the day but seemed to find a greater degree of consistency on his way into the clubhouse earlier his afternoon.

“We have a lot of good left and can get into good position with solid golf tomorrow” said Millican.

As a team, UNM continued to showcase it’s scoring ability on par-5’s. Unsurprisingly the team is near the top of the tournament’s par-5 scoring, currently carrying a 4.70 (6-under) average. That mark is good for the second-lowest in the field, trailing only the mark set by Pepperdine at 4.65 (7-under).

Defending champion USC continues to roll after Day 1, carding a team score of 10-under 278 three shots clear of 10th-ranked Stanford. Pepperdine rounds out the top-3, trailing the 7-under mark of Stanford by one stroke.

As for the individual side of the competition, Collin Morikawa leads the way after his 6-under 66 today. Right on his heels is Maverick McNealy hailing from Stanford.
