Hernandez Tong Earns MW Men’s Tennis Player of the Week

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Sophomore Ricky Hernandez-Tong has been named Mountain West Men’s Tennis Player of the Week after helping the University of New Mexico men’s tennis team to a 2-0 record last weekend. This honor is Hernandez-Tong’s first in his career and the first this season.
 
Hernandez-Tong helped lead New Mexico to a 2-0 weekend of wins over UTSA, 5-0, and New Mexico State, 4-1. He also went a combined 2-0 at the No. 1 singles and 1-1 at the No. 1 doubles with teammate Lawrence Perrin.
 
Hernandez-Tong collected singles victories at the No. 1 over UTSA’s Juri Reckow, 6-2, 6-3, and New Mexico State’s Chris Goncalves, 6-4, 6-2. He currently leads the Lobos in singles wins thus far this season, posting 14-5 overall.
 
Alongside Perrin in doubles play, Hernandez-Tong defeated Reckow and Kai Breitbach of UTSA, 6-1 at No. 1. He is currently 9-8 overall in doubles at the No. 2 with Perrin, Rodolfo Jauregui, and Jorge Escutia.
 
The Lobos head to Stockton, California to compete in the Pacific Mountain Invitational on Saturday and Sunday hosted by University of the Pacific. More details and information on the opponents and matches will be announced on Thursday.
