BOULDER, Colo. — For the second time in three matches, the New Mexico Lobo tennis team lost 4-0, this time to Colorado, in a match where UNM was leading in the other matches and looked on the way to a possible comeback victory. For the second time in three matches, it wasn’t meant to be.
The loss dropped UNM to 0-4 on the season, while Colorado improved to 5-1.
New Mexico lost the doubles point to open things up for the fourth time this season. The team of Ludivine Burguire and Dominique Dulski lost at No. 1 doubles to Lou Ronaldson and Chloe Hule 6-3 while Rachana Bhat and Cassie Chung lost at No. 3 doubles to Nuria Oremo-Ruiz and Brigitte Beck 6-1.
Colorado then took the opening three singles matches for the win. Ormeno-Ruiz made it 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Burguiere, and then Ronaldson won 6-3, 6-1 over Dulski. Ruth Copas at No. 3 singles lost her first set 6-3 but came back to even the match at 1-1 with a 6-4 win, setting up a decisive third set. That also gave time for UNM’s Cassie Chung to take a 6-4 lead on Anabelle Andrinopoulos at No. 4 singles and Diana Wong to bolt to a 6-3 opening set win over Ilana Oleynek at No. 5 singles. Copas needed to win to keep UNM alive at 3-1 and allow Rachana Bhat to hit the court on the three-court set-up, but it wasn’t meant to be, as she dropped the third set 6-3, giving CU a 4-0 win.
New Mexico now gets a week off to regroup before heading back out onto the road for a pair of matches in Salt Lake City. UNM will take on Utah on Friday, February 17 and then Wisconsin on Saturday, February 18.
