TUCSON, Ariz. — The New Mexico Lobos couldn’t pick up a signature win, losing 4-0 to Arizona, giving the Wildcats an 18th straight win over the Lobos. The loss dropped UNM to 1-7 on the season, while Arizona improved to 7-1.
UNM lost the doubles point for the eighth time this season, dropping doubles matches at No. 1 and No. 2 6-0 each. The match at No. 3 was tight at 3-3 with Emily Olivier and Diana Wong playing well after losing in a tiebreaker yesterday.
Arizona made quick work of things in singles to post the 4-0 win. Devin Chypyha beat Cassie Chung 6-2, 6-0 and then Ruth Copas fell 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Arizona clinched it at No. 5 when Rachana Bhat went down 6-3, 6-1, ending her three-match winning streak.
As has happened this season, UNM was pushing for three-set wins in the other matches when the clincher came. The best match of the day for UNM was at No. 1 singles where Ludivine Burguiere drew a tough assignment of No. 27 Lauren Parker and was all square at 6-1, 1-6, 2-2 when the match was halted. Emily Olivier was also tied 6-2, 3-6, 1-1 at No. 6 singles when it was halted, and Diana Wong was tied 4-4 in the second after losing 6-3 in the first.
UNM has one more road swing to conclude its opening 10-match road streak to start the season as the Lobos travel to face Cal State Northridge on Saturday, March 4 and UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, March 5.
