Weekly Match Notes 4

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. –— Fresh off their first win of the season, The University of New Mexico Lobos head to Tucson, Arizona for another hearty challenge as UNM will take on Cincinnati and Arizona as the team continues its season opening 10-match road swing.

The Lobos are coming off a good weekend in which they got nipped 5-2 by Utah in a very close match that wasn’t decided until the final three matches, which all went three sets, and then a dominating 5-2 win over a Wisconsin squad that is coached by UNM’s former head coach.  That win was the first in the Lobo career of Stephanie Wooten-Quijada.  The weekend also saw both Rachana Bhat and Cassie Chung go 2-0 in singles play.

UNM’s first home match is Sunday, March 12 against Minnesota.

The Week Ahead:
The University of New Mexico Lobos (1-5) gets in the vans and heads to Arizona for a fourth straight road weekend.  The team will face off with the Cincinnati Bearcats (5-2) in the first meeting between the two teams, with the match being played in Tucson.  The next morning, the Lobos will play host Arizona (6-1).  All matches will be at the Lanelle Robson Tennis Center.

The Coaches:
The University of New Mexico Lobos are coached by Stephanie Wooten-Quijada, who is in her first season with New Mexico.  She came to UNM from UT-Rio Grande Valley where she led the Vaqueros to a WAC Tournament title.  Her coaching career also includes one season stints at UTRGV and Stephen F. Austin.   Cincinnati is coached by Eric Toth who is in his third year with the Bearcats after eight years as the men’s and women’s head coach at Xavier.  Vicky Maes is in her 16th year as Arizona’s head coach after highly decorated playing career at Arizona, including earned All-America four times and being named to the Pac-10 All-Decade team

UNM is 0-0 against Cincinnati and 0-17 against Arizona.
