Season Statistics (as of Feb. 20)
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — After nine matches on the road, The University of New Mexico men’s tennis team will host their first two opening home matches of the season on Saturday, Feb. 25 at the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium.
Come out and watch the team take on UTSA at 10 a.m. MT followed by New Mexico State at 4 p.m. MT. There will also be free food and beverages, while supplies last, for fans at both of the matches. If you are unable to attend the matches, there will be live stats broadcast to follow.
“We are excited for some home comforts and to play two good teams on our home turf,” head coach Ben Dunbar said. “We are looking forward to getting a little better from last week’s matches and playing in front of our home fans. Go Lobos!”
New Mexico (4-5) kicked off their spring season with a challenging nine-match road streak, battling some of the best teams in Florida, California and Utah. They are coming into opening weekend 3-0 after three big wins over BYU, Nebraska and Utah. The Lobos are eager to hit their home courts and play in front of their fans for the first time this year.
In singles, Ricky Hernandez-Tong currently leads the Lobos in wins with a 12-9 record followed by Rodolfo Jauregui 10-7. In doubles, Bart Van Leijsen and Dominic West lead the team 5-3 followed by Hernandez-Tong and Jauregui 5-4.
The UTSA Roadrunners (2-5) are coming off a three loss streak to Louisiana – Lafayette, Texas Tech, and Texas A&M – Corpus Christi. The Rio Grande Rival Aggie’s of New Mexico State (5-2) are coming off a 4-1 win over Weber State and a 1-4 setback to UT Arlington last weekend.
