Complete 2016 Fall Mountain West All-Academic Teams
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The University of New Mexico had 60 student-athletes honored as Mountain West All-Academic honorees for the Fall, tying once again for the second-most in school history. Overall, UNM was fourth in the Mountain West for the Fall, behind Utah State, Boise State and Nevada.
UNM has led the Mountain West in total All-Academic student-athletes in each of the last four academic years, starting in 2012-13. UNM had finished in the top-three of the conference for every Fall semester since 2006, a span of 10 seasons.
UNM’s 60 helped the conference set a record with 614 student-athletes honored. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.
The 60 gives UNM 60 Fall honorees in three straight years for the first time in school history, and the second straight year with exactly 60 after a school record 61 were honored in 2014-15. UNM also had 60 Fall honorees in the 2010-11 academic year.
The program totals for UNM went as such: football had 19 on the team, women’s soccer 16, women’s cross country eight, men’s cross country eight and women’s volleyball nine.
For football, the 19 is the second-most in program history, behind the 20 that the program had named in 2014-15 and tying the 19 last season. It gives UNM 88 Mountain West All-Academic honorees in Bob Davie‘s five seasons with the program, and the 58 in the last three years is easily the best stretch in program history. UNM’s 19 tied for the fourth-most among all Mountain West football teams.
Women’s soccer picked up as the 16 honorees under coach Heather Dyche‘s after a school record 18 last season. UNM’s 16 tied for the second-most in the Mountain West in women’s soccer.
Women’s cross country, winners of nine straight Mountain West titles under Joe Franklin, had eight honorees, good for a tie for third-most in the conference. On the men’s side, the Lobos picked up eight honorees as well, tying for the second-most in the league and second-most in program history, behind the nine in 2010-11.
Women’s volleyball had nine honorees under Jeff Nelson, tying for the second-most in program history behind the 11 honorees in 2010-11.
