LIHUE, Hawaii — After three days in paradise the University of New Mexico men’s golf team has notched yet another top-10 finish here in Hawaii. The team jointly shared a T9 finish at 5-over 869 (295-282-292) with UTEP.
The day started fast with four Lobos notching birdies in their opening two holes. On the day, the team was as high as fifth place alone, however a few errors closing out the opening line led to the team dropping back down to where it eventually finished. Once again a great team recovery was made with the team five total birdies en route to the clubhouse.
UNM head coach Glen Millican on the day’s performance “Not the finish we wanted coming over here but good effort by our guys. We had it going early, needed to play holes two and three better to make a big move. Both are hard holes and got us today.”
Andre Garcia (75-69-72) was the Lobo leader on the week. His consistency lead him to a top-25 performance. His day included back-too-back birdies on the 9th and 10th holes, both of which are par-5’s. After 54 holes of competition Garcia finished in a four-way tie for 22nd at even-par 216.
The due of Gustavo Morantes (72-73-73) and Andrej Bevins (72-73-73) accompanied each other once again on the leaderboard. Both players carded 1-over 73’s on the day and both finished at 2-over 218 overall. They were joined by six other players for T32.
Samuel Kim (76-68-76) struggled on the day, he eventually carded a 4-over 76 on his way to a T47 finish at 4-over 220 for the week.
On the statistical side, UNM carried the fourth-lowest par-4 scoring average in the field. In addition the team also third most eagles and pars this week, a mark of their consistency. The highlight of the week however, came in the teams par-5 scoring performance wherein the Lobos managed to play the par-5’s in 24-under fashion. Furthermore, two Lobos in Samuel Kim and Andrej Garcia, tied for the second most eagles in the field.
“Another nice job on our last four holes to pick up a couple coming in. Now time to head back home and start preparing for Las Vegas” said Millican.
