LIHUE, Hawaii —
After two days in paradise the University of New Mexico Lobos men’s golf team sits in a tie for eighth place with a team score of 1-over 577 (295-282).

The team shaved thirteen stories off yesterday’s round, en route to a 6-under mark today. That score was good for the second-lowest team score on the day and allowed the Lobos to leap up four spots on the leaderboard, the biggest move of the day.

UNM was lead by the performance of Andre Garcia (75-69-144) carded a 3-under 69 today, a six-shot improvement from yesterday’s round, to move up 35 spots on the tournament’s leaderboard. His round included a stretch of six holes played in 4-under fashion, including an eagle on the par-5 13th. At day’s end, Garcia sat in T27 at even-par for the tournament.

As impressive as as Garcia’s day was, Samuel Kim (76-68) was not to be outdone. Kim’s 4-under 68 was an eight-shot improvement from his previous round total, and included two instances of back-to-back birdies, one of which helped him close out his final three holes in 2-under fashion. The 4-under mark was the lowest UNM score on the day, and enabled Kim to move up 42 spots on the leaderboard. His day eventually ended with him T27 at even-par through the tournament’s first two rounds.

Following close behind was the tandem of Gustavo Morantes (72-73) and Andrej Bevins (72-73), both of who finished the day in T35 at 1-over 145 overall. Morantes, helped the Lobos along by closing out his round with consecutive birdies in order to recover after a stretch of three bogeys in four holes. Bevins on the other hand was the most consistent Lobo, on the day he recorded 15 total pars.

Sophomore Sean Carlon (80-72-152) also made a nice recovery on the day, recording an even-par performance today, an eight-shot improvement. His round included five total birdies, and playing his final three holes in 3-under fashion, allowing the Lobos to comfortably crack the top-10.

“Another really good job finishing today, 6-under in our last four holes” began UNM head coach Glen Millican. “Good round for us that puts us in better position going into the final round. Nice job from top to bottom for the guys.” he concluded.

So far as a team this week the Lobos have found the most success on the par-5’s thus far. The team has thus far plays those hole in 16-under fashion and are currently carrying a team scoring average of 4.60, good for fifth-lowest in the field.
