LIHUE, Hawaii — After Wednesday’s opening day the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, the University of New Mexico men’s golf team sits in 12th place after shooting a team score of 7-over 295.
 
The Lobos were lead by Gustavo Morantes and Andrej Bevins, who both carded even-par performances and finished tied for 23rd. Both players carded five birdies on the day, with Bevins recording a stretch of three consecutive and Morantes managing back-to-back birdies helping him to recover from a misstep on the par-4 11th.
 
Andre Garcia found himself one under after his opening nine holes, but was unable to card a birdie on his homeward stretch and eventually found himself at 3-over and tied for 62nd.
 
Sophomore Samuel Kim had the most eventful day for the Lobos, carding the teams only eagle on the par-5 1st and managed back-to-back birdies on the 9th and 10th. At days end Kim found himself tied for 69th at 4-over.
 
Fellow Sophomore Sean Carlon struggled on the day and eventually finished at 8-over par and tied for 100th.
 
Freshman Sam Dickey entered the clubhouse at 2-over after his 74 today. Dickey, who is competing as an individual, played his final 12 holes in even-par fashion.
 
“Not a great day for us but we finished well, playing the last three holes in 4-under. There’s still a lot of golf to play tomorrow and Friday,” said UNM head coach Glen Millican.
 
After today’s action, Virginia — the fourth ranked squad in the country — leads the pack at 20-under 268. The team was lead by Jimmy Stanger who shot a bogey-free 10-under 62, setting the course record in the process. All five Cavalier’s ended the day inside the tournament’s top-15.
 
Texas A&M (12-under) and UNLV (6-under) round out the top-3 teams.
