LIHUE, Hawaii — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team has once again set off for the 50th state and is slated compete in the 41st-annual John A. Burns Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Hawaii.

This year’s tournament installment runs Wednesday, Feb. 15 through Friday, Feb. 17. Participants will play a total of 54 holes over the three-day tournament. The course is set to play at 6,991 yards, with a par of 72. The tournament utilizes a shotgun start each day.

UNM head coach Glen Millican is especially looking forward to this week after missing the previous tournament due to illness.

“For me, it is great to be back on the road with the team,” Millican said. “Coach Massoletti and I are looking forward to doing what we can to help them play their best this week.”

Last year the Lobos rallied to finish in seventh place overall. The final-round heroics allowed the squad to post a 5-under team score, good enough to leap four spots up the leaderboard and claim the second-lowest team score on the day overall. Last year, UNM had two players finish inside the top-20 in Andrej Bevins and Gustavo Morantes.

Defending team champion Texas will face a stout 18-team field that includes the likes of Arizona, Brigham Young, California, Grand Canyon, Hawai’i, Hawai’i-Hilo, Kennesaw State, New Mexico, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, Santa Clara, Texas A&M, UNLV, Utah, UTEP, Virginia, Washington and Washington State.

“We are very happy to being back at the Burns,” Millican said. “Lobo Golf has played in every John Burns since it was started. Coach Miyashiro and his staff at Wailua do an amazing job hosting this event and make it a special experience for the teams. The course is a good test and is always is great condition.”

This year’s event will be played on the Wailua Golf Course with a par of 72 and a relatively manageable yardage of 6991. Wailua is a municipal course, which played host to three USGA National Public Links Championships and has a Top 10 rating by Golf Digest as one of the best courses in the state of Hawai’i.

The tournament began in 1977 and is considered the premiere collegiate golfing event in Hawaii. With a list of former participants and individual champions including PGA stars such as Notah Begay (1995) and Tiger Woods (1996) of Stanford and Oklahoma State’s Bo Van Pelt (1997).

“Today and tomorrow will be practice rounds for us before we get going Wednesday through Friday,” Millican concluded as he rounded out the week’s busy itinerary.
