HOUSTON — Sophomore Adriana Palomino capped an impressive weekend by breaking a third school record while the Lobos had three athletes finish in the top eight of the 200 butterfly to help The University of New Mexico swimming and diving team move up to finish fifth Sunday at the Phill Hansel Invitational.
Palomino, who had broken school records in the 200 and 500 freestyle already this week, smashed the two-year-old Lobo record in the 1650 free by 11 seconds while taking first at the event with a time of 16:22.46. It was her second win at the 10-team event as she also won the 500 free while Palomino also took third in the 200 free. The time was also good to qualify her into the B finals of the NCAA Championship – something she did in the other two freestyle events this weekend as well.
The Lobos also racked up points in the 200 butterfly Sunday night with Abigail Wheeler taking fifth (2:01.81), Emily Huffer taking seventh (2:02.23) and Anna Lengyel finishing eighth (2:02.82). It was the most Lobos to qualify for the top finals in an event this weekend.
Those two events helped UNM jump from seventh after day two to finishing the event in fifth place with 706.5 points. Host Houston won the event with 1,392.5 points followed by Rice (1,214), UC-Davis (841) and Colorado State (796). The Lobos were followed by Tulane (690.5), Idaho (668.5), North Texas (574), Vanderbilt (554) and New Mexico State (391).
Another strong performance came from diver Allyson Concepcion as she took fourth in platform diving with a score of 193.95. Teammate Madeline Horner took seventh (184.75) while Valencia McDonald took 12th (139.85) and Alex Aaberg finished in 14th (138.05).
The Lobos got a top-three finish in the 400 freestyle relay as the team of Konoha Shinada, Madison Burns, Kaela McKee and Palomino finished third with a time of 3:24.58.
Also scoring points for the Lobos on Sunday was: Madison Lash (24th in the 1650 free), Celine Bertrand (first in the 200 fly D final), McKee (seventh in the 200 back B final), Deidra Dorough (sixth in the 200 back C final), Shinada (third in the 100 free B final), Burns (eighth in the 100 free D final), Lindsey Englestead (fourth in the 200 breaststroke B final), Emily McGill (third in the 200 breast C final) and Raevin Teran-Richardson (second in the 200 breast D final).
The Lobos host Colorado State and Air Force on Dec. 3 in their final home meet of the season.
