Lobos in 7th after day two of Phill Hansel Invite

HOUSTON — The University of New Mexico women’s swimming and diving team sits in seventh place at the Phill Hansel Invitational after Saturday’s second day of action.

The Lobos were led by a strong showing in the finals of the 100 butterfly as Konoha Shinada took third (54.75) and Abigail Wheeler took fourth (54.96). Shinada also took sixth in the B final of the 100 backstroke (56.50) while Wheeler took fourth in the C final of the 100 backstroke (56.22).

Also in the 100 butterfly, Emily Huffer took second in the C finals (55.96). The sophomore also took fourth in the B final of the 100 backstroke (56.23).

Adriana Palomino for the second consecutive day set a school record and qualified for the NCAA Championships as the sophomore took third in the 200 free with a time of 1:47.63 – good for the national B finals. It beat her own record of 1:48.78 that she set last season.

Emily McGill took eighth in the finals of the 400 IM on Saturday with a time of 4:29.22 (she also took seventh in the B final of the 100 breaststroke). Also in the 400 IM, Anna Lengyel took eighth in the C final (4:29.94), Celine Bertrand took second in the D final (4:29.74) and Deidra Dorough took fifth in the D final (4:44.13).

In the 100 breaststroke, Asami Terada took fifth in the C final (1:04.76), Lindsey Englestead took first in the D final (1:04.02) and Raevin Richardson took third in the D final (1:05.11) while Kaela McKee took seventh in the C final of the 100 backstroke (57.07).

In the 3-meter diving finals, Allyson Concepcion took sixth (260.85) while Valencia McDonald took second in the B final (235.85) and Madeline Horner took eighth in the B final (206.95).

In the relays, the UNM 800 freestyle relay team of Palomino, Huffer, Englestead and Lengyel took fourth (7:29.01) while the Lobo 200 medley relay team of McKee, McGill, Shinada and Madison Burns took eighth (1:43.17).

The Lobos conclude action at the Phill Hansel Invite on Sunday.
