Lobos Close Out Fall Campaign With T7 Finish

DALLAS, TexasThe University of New Mexico men’s golf team closed out its performance at the 2016 installment of the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate, finishing tied for 7th with the University of Minnesota at 14-over 1079 (356-356-367).
 
Sophomore Sean Carlon captured his second top-15 of the season’s Fall segment, finished at even-par 213 (70-71-72) and in sole possession of 12th. Carlon, a stalwart of consistency, opened and ended his closing round with birdies. He continued his strong par-5 scoring average, carding a 4.67 for the week, the fourth-lowest in the field.
 
Following closely behind was Andrej Bevins, who found himself inside the tournament’s top-15 at 1-over 214 (72-69-73) and in an eight-way tie for 13th. Statistically Bevins notched top-5 performances in par-3 and par-5 scoring, with averages of 3.00 and 4.56 respectively.
 
Joining Bevins at 1-over 214 was Samuel Kim (73-72-69), who jumped up 17 spots thanks to his 2-under mark of 69 on the day. Kim roared off four birdies in the last seven holes to finish with 10 total birdies, the fifth most in the field. He also finished with the second-lowest par-5 scoring average in relation to the field at 4.44.
 
Andre Garcia struggled on the day and eventually finished 4-over 217 (70-70-77). He carried the fifth-lowest par-4 scoring average on the week at 4.00.
 
Gustavo Morantes opened his day with a birdie and eventually finished in a four-way tie for 48th at 8-over 221 (71-74-76). Morantes finished tied for the fourth-lowest par-5 scoring average in the field, while also being one of only eight players to tally an eagle during the completion.
 
Freshman Sam Dickey steadied his course, holding his round and finished in 72nd place alone at 27-over 240 (79-84-77).
 
As a team UNM had another strong statistical performance, notching the third-most birdies in the field with 52 at competitions end. The Lobos also carried a 4.83 scoring average on par-5’s, the fourth-lowest in the field.
 
On to the medalist races.
 
In the team competition, host Baylor ran away from the field, finishing 33 strokes clear of second-place Houston. The Bears’ were propelled by strong performances across the board. Eventually the team finished with all five scorers inside the top-15, including laying claim to the individual co-medalists.
 
Michigan initiated a launch up the leaderboard today, leaping up four spots to finish in sole possession of 3rd place. 20th ranked Kent State steered itself three shots clear of Iowa to retain its stance in 4th alone.
 
Braden Bailey and Matthew Perrine, both of Baylor, tied at 10-under 203 to claim the Bears’ sweep of medalist awards. Hunter Shattuck, also of Baylor, tied for 3rd with Pepperdine’s Roy Cootes. Kent State’s Chase Johnson rounds out the individual top-5.
 
This closes out the Lobo’s Fall campaign, next up will be the Arizona Intercollegiate Jan. 23-24, 2017.
