ORLANDO, Fla. — After Sunday’s day one action of the 2016 installment of the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational, the University of New Mexico men’s golf team sits in 12th place at 10-over 298.

The Lobos, now ranked 42nd, were led by the efforts of Andre Garcia and Andrej Bevins. Both sit inside the tournament’s top-20 after Sunday’s action. Strangely enough both sit in nine-way ties for ninth and 18th.

Garcia once again was the low Lobo, posting a 1-under mark of 71 Sunday and tallied the most birdies for the team on the day and currently finds himself carrying the lowest par-3 scoring average in the field. Bevins finds himself in a log jam after carding an even-par 72 on the day, while also carrying the fourth-lowest par-4 scoring average thus far in the tournament.

Sean Carlon is next up on the list of Lobo scorers. He sits tied for 58th after posting a 5-over mark of 77. Carlon made the turn at 1-over and made a few mistakes coming home after a early birdie to open his back nine.

Gustavo Morantes had a tough time right out of the gate today and struggled to gain any momentum going forward throughout the day. Morantes eventually came home in 6-over-par fashion, with a day one score of 78 (tied for 62nd).

Rounding out the list of Lobo competitors was sophomore Samuel Kim who also struggled early in the day before carding consecutive birdies late in his opening nine. The attempt at reconciliation fell short however and Kim finds himself tied for 71st at 8-over par (80).

For comparison, the Lobos are only three strokes behind number one ranked Illinois, showing that this year’s field is just as deep, while the course is just as difficult as ever. This year’s set up at the Isleworth Country Club is a formidable 7,544 yards from the championship markers.

The tournament — this year co-hosted by the the Universities of Central Florida and North Texas — also has co-leaders of the first day of competition. The seventh-ranked Florida Gators and 31st-ranked Purdue Boilermakers sit atop the leaderboard at 5-under 283.

Strangely enough the rest of the top five is also deadlocked with ties between North Florida and third-ranked Vanderbilt for third place at 2-under 286, whereas 36th-ranked Arizona State and the University of Augusta round out the top five with identical scores of even-par 288.

In the race for the medalist, the early lead was taken by Hannes Ronneblad of Texas Tech after posting a 5-under round of 67. On the day, Ronneblad’s lone blemish was a bogey on the 628 -ard par-5 third hole. Two of the nation’s top-100 players are trailing close behind in Andrew Alligood (tied for second) of North Florida, and Jorge Garcia (tied for fourth) of the University of Florida.
