Lobos Notch Third Consecutive Top-5 In Colorado

PARKER, Colo. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team notched it’s third consecutive fifth-place finish on the year today after completion of the inaugural Paintbrush Invitational hosted by the University of Denver. The team finished at 7-over 871 (288-285-298).
 
“Pretty tough second of day,” UNM coach Glen Millican said. “It was not the round we wanted today but still a solid finish.”
 
Andre Garcia continued to display consistency and on-course leadership, leading the Lobos’ fifth-place effort by finishing tied for third. Overall, Garcia finished at 6-under 210 (70-67-73) and carried the second lowest par-5 scoring average in the field. His statistical performance was rounded out by tallying 14 total birdies and 33 pars, both tied for eighth most in the field.
 
Andrej Bevins performed well this week, notching his first top-15 performance of the 2016-17 season, finishing at 1-under 215 (74-70-71) good for a tie for 14th overall. Statistically Bevins played well enough to sit inside the top-10 in par-4 and par-5 scoring, carrying averages of 3.93 and 4.50 respectively.
 
Sean Carlon snuck inside the tournament’s top-40 performers, finishing at 8-over 224 (71-74-79). Carlon’s week was highlighted by the eagle he notched on the par-4 14th, the eagle was one of the two tallied by UNM in week.
 
Sam Kim (73-74-80-227) and Gustavo Morantes (77-77-75-229) struggled on the week, finishing tied for 51st and 59th respectively. Kim tallied 11 birdies and Morantes followed with 13.
 
On the individual side Ben Tolsma finished tied for 77th at 21-over 237 (80-80-77).
 
The team champion of the inaugural Paintbrush Invitational was Oklahoma State at 14-under 850 (290-278-282). The Cowboys rallied after a slow start through the first 18, carding the lowest team rounds on both of the final 36.
 
Colorado (293-283-283-859) cleared the 3-under mark of third place Texas Tech (285-286-290-861) by two stokes en route to finishing gin sole possession of second place.
 
Oregon (282-292-294-868), landing three shots clear of UNM, rounds out the tournament top-5.
 
This year’s medalist was host Denver’s Petter Mikalsen, who’s 13-under mark of 203 (70-64-69). His second round 64 tied for the lowest for the tournament.
