Lobos Sit T2 After Weather Shortened Day 1

PARKER, COLO. — The University of New Mexico Men’s golf team took to the field for the inaugural Paintbrush Invitational today, posting 6-under 529 (288-241). The team is currently tied for second with Texas Tech at 6-under par overall. The second round was suspended due to darkness with the Lobos having between two and three holes left over for tomorrow morning. Play is set to resume tomorrow with an 8:30 a.m. MT shotgun start.
 
UNM head coach Glen Millican began saying that the team “played good” and continued that the Lobos were “in good position going into tomorrow.”
 
UNM sat atop the leaderboard for the majority of the day. After struggling momentarily in the afternoon portion of the day’s competition the team rallied to retake the tournament lead. However, Oklahoma State staged a late rally this afternoon and eventually vaulted above the Lobos, along with the Red Raiders, clearing the squads by a stroke. The Cowboys sit at 7-under 533 heading into tomorrow’s action.
 
Andre Garcia kept up his momentum from the William H. Tucker, posting an opening 2-under 70 this morning. His first round opened with birdies on three of the first four holes. He followed up his morning performance with seven birdies accompanied by a lone bogey through fifteen holes. Garcia finished the day, before suspension of play, in second place alone at 7-under 125 (70-55).
 
Two other Lobos found themselves inside the tournament’s top-20 in Andrej Bevins (74-59) and Sam Kim (73-64). Both are even par through fifteen and sixteen holes of competition respectively. Bevins lead the field in par-5 scoring, carrying an average of 4.00, whereas Kim carried an average of 3.80 on the par-4’s.
 
Sophomore Sean Carlon, following up his career best performance at this year’s William H. Tucker, notched seven birdies on the day and currently finds himself T25 at 1-over 137 (71-66) with his second round yet to be completed.
 
Gustavo Morantes struggled on the day and finds himself T57 at 7-over 140 (77-63).
 
On the statistical side, UNM placed inside the top-5 in four out of six major statistical categories. Highlighted by the team’s 40 birdies, one off the mark of Oklahoma State for most in the field, and par-5 scoring average of 4.74 managing to play the holes in 10-under fashion.
 
The tournament is led by host Denver’s Petter Mikalsen at 9-under 126 (70-56). Mikalsen tallied twelve birdies and an eagle on the day, Mikalsen played his final five holes of the day before the weather delay in five-under fashion.
